Somabay has partnered with EDECS to expand its Marina on the Red Sea coast.

The project will increase berthing space by 72,000 cubic metres for around 260 yachts.

Somabay aims to create a world-class, sustainable destination while preserving the Red Sea’s charm.

EDECS brings over thirty years of expertise, ensuring high standards for the marina upgrade.

This development aligns with Egypt’s broader ambitions to boost tourism and investment confidence.

Somabay, a well-known resort spot on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, has shaken hands with EDECS—one of the region’s most respected construction players—for a major upgrade of its Marina. This agreement signals the start of Phase II of the Marina’s expansion, which is set to boost capacity and polish up facilities to attract even more of those luxury yachts drifting along the coast.

Now, that might sound like just another seaside development story, but there’s some heft behind it. EDECS brings over thirty years’ worth of engineering know‑how in ports, bridges, and infrastructure across the Middle East and Africa. With that kind of track record, it’s hardly surprising that Somabay is trusting them again after previous successful collaborations. The new work will enlarge the Marina by more than seventy‑two thousand cubic metres—no small feat—raising its berthing space to around 260 yachts. That’s quite the boost for a destination already famous for its picture‑postcard shoreline and high‑end vibe.

Somabay’s chief executive, Ibrahim El Missiri, said the project is part of a bigger push to shape the area into a fully integrated destination while keeping the natural charm of the Red Sea intact. As he put it, the aim is to keep standards world‑class without losing sight of sustainability. I’ve met a few tourism developers who talk a big game on that front, but I reckon this blend of careful growth and environmental respect might actually be spot on if done right.

EDECS’s vice chairman, Dr Mahmoud Hassanen, sounded rather chuffed too. He described the new expansion as proof of EDECS’s commitment to deliver marine projects to global standards. Fair play, really—projects like these can be a bit of a faff without seasoned teams that know how to keep things ticking smoothly from design to delivery.

From what I’ve seen, Somabay has always had this knack for reinventing itself while keeping its Red Sea soul alive. The Marina development continues that rhythm: more yachts, upgraded facilities, and a rising profile among international visitors hunting for sun, sea and, well… a bit of opulence. The timing also sits nicely with Egypt’s wider tourism ambitions, leaning on destinations that blend comfort with investment confidence.

At Arageek, we often talk about how the region’s ventures—from tech startups to tourism giants—mirror each other’s resilience. Standing on that marina not long ago, sipping a rather strong coffee, I couldn’t help but think how this coastal transformation echoes what we see in young entrepreneurs across MENA: ambition anchored in heritage, driven by the hope of global recognition. That said, only time will tell if this expansion sails as smoothly as planned… but if all goes well, it’ll be another feather in Somabay’s rather stylish cap, definately.
