Mwasalat and Birba will provide hydrogen-powered shuttles for the 2025 Green Hydrogen Summit.

Shell's station will fuel these vehicles, supporting Oman's carbon neutrality goals.

The Summit expects over 3,000 attendees, including global investors and researchers.

Oman aims to become a major hydrogen hub, leveraging its strategic location and infrastructure.

Hydrogen technology remains costly, but Oman's commitment to sustainability is inspiring.

Oman is taking another ambitious step towards a greener, more sustainable future, thanks to an agreement just inked between public transport provider Mwasalat—part of Asyad Group—and Birba. Under this fresh pact, dedicated hydrogen-powered vehicles will shuttle guests around during the upcoming Green Hydrogen Summit, slated for early December 2025 in Muscat.

Shell's green hydrogen production station will supply the fuel, aligning perfectly with Oman's robust push towards carbon neutrality and efficiently smart transportation. Meanwhile, the Summit itself is shaping up to be a major regional magnet, organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom)—the official body helping Oman navigate its green hydrogen agenda. Scheduled to unfold between the 1st and 3rd of December, this event is set to draw a diverse crowd—over 3,000 global participants are expected, ranging from influential decision-makers and investors to developers and leading research institutions.

Now, I'm not usually one to get overly excited about government-organised events—sometimes they can be a bit of a faff, you know? But, I reckon this initiative hits the sweet spot. With over 50,000 square kilometres allocated specifically for hydrogen development, Oman seems spot on in positioning itself as a prominent hydrogen hub. Dr. Firas bin Ali Al-Abdwani, Director General of Renewable Energy and Hydrogen at the Ministry, pointed out the Sultanate's strong readiness for leveraging its strategic geographic location combined with top-notch infrastructure—including well-developed ports—to tap into the blossoming global market for hydrogen.

At Arageek, we're always eager to see initiatives like this popping up around the MENA region. Personally, it reminds me of when major GCC countries first began exploring solar power more seriously a few years back. And believe it or not, the momentum around hydrogen feels similarly promising—perhaps even more so.

On the flip side, though, hydrogen technology still has a long way to go before becoming mainstream. It demands significant investment and a fair amount of patience until costs eventually come down. But Oman's enthusiasm is palpable—and certainly chuffed to bits by its forward-looking approach.

Still, one thing is clear: as participants catch rides on these zero-emissions hydrogen vehicles, Oman will send a powerful message about its commitment to sustainability circles worldwide. And that, well... I mean, is nothing short of inspiring.

(Oh, and yes—one tiny hiccup I nearly forgot: mark your calenders carefully—it's December 2025, not 2023!)
