Wittify.

ai, a Riyadh-based startup, raised $1,5 million to focus on conversational AI for Arabic.

They aim to create "world-class technology" for the often overlooked Arabic-speaking market.

Key founders bring extensive experience, setting Wittify apart by building from scratch, not localising.

Their AI supports 25 Arabic dialects and integrates easily with existing business systems.

Wittify has joined major accelerators and secured enterprise and government clients regionally.

Something rather exciting is bubbling up in the world of Arabic artificial intelligence, and, as someone who’s rooted in Arageek’s mission to energise and empower MENA startups, I can’t help but get a bit chuffed to bits when I see a local player aiming for the global stage. Wittify.ai, a startup based in Riyadh, has just raised a tidy $1.5 million in a pre-seed round backed by Saudi business angels and industry figures. Not bad for a company that first opened its doors in 2024.

Wittify isn’t just dipping its toes in the crowded pool of AI. Instead, they’re swimming against the current—focusing on conversational AI for the Arabic-speaking world, a space that’s often overlooked by the major international players. The founder and CEO Nader El-Batrawi summed up their approach, saying they’re not simply filling a regional gap but “building world-class technology that’s ready to compete globally.” Pretty spot on if you ask me, as so many companies treat Arabic as a bit of an afterthought.

The team isn’t short on talent either. El-Batrawi brings two decades of international experience to the table, and he’s joined by co-founder Dr. Sarah Alhumoud. Now, Dr. Alhumoud is a bit of a heavyweight when it comes to Arabic AI—think former Head of AI at King Salman’s Complex for Arabic Language, and experience spanning a PhD from Glasgow to research work at MIT. That said, her punt on building from the ground up, rather than simply localising English-based models, might be what sets Wittify apart from the crowd.

The company’s AI agents are now available in beta. They allow businesses to create voice, text, or even hybrid agents using a low- or no-code platform, which is a huge help for companies that don’t want the faff of building complex systems from scratch. These agents work across everything from mobile apps and websites to telephony and CRMs. They’re not just chatting—they get stuck into real tasks, automating jobs and integrating with existing workflows. I reckon that's a game changer for businesses who’ve struggled to stitch together various systems.

And believe it or not, Wittify’s language engine isn’t just for “standard” Arabic. Their automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech engines have been trained across more than 25 Arabic dialects. Anyone who’s ever tried to order a coffee in a different Arab country knows just how tricky those variations can be! On the flip side, the tech is built to handle multilingual demands as well, showing ambition that stretches far beyond local borders.

The startup has quickly caught the eye of big regional players. They’ve already got enterprise and government clients on board, and are now part of three leading accelerators: inspireU from STC, MISK Entrepreneurship Foundation’s programme (in cahoots with Plug and Play), and the TikTok x Blossom Accelerator. Not an easy line-up to break into, so clearly they’re doing something right.

Of course, as with any early-stage company, there’s a mountain to climb. Building truly native, culturally-aware AI for Arabic is no walk in the park; the richness and complexity of dialects can tangle even the best machine learning models. Still, seeing a MENA-based startup place Arabic not just at the centre, but as the driving force of their technology, is, well… a breath of fresh air.

If Wittify keeps up the momentum, we might soon see AI assistants speaking in more authentic dialects—and with a bit more understanding—than ever before. That’s something I’d definately like to see, both for local businesses and for anyone, like us at Arageek, who wants to see regional startups punching well above their weight.
