Egypt’s push to localise advanced manufacturing has gained another boost, this time from homegrown CNC specialist Simplex. The company has invested USD 50 million to open a new production facility in 10th of Ramadan City, marking a significant step in its expansion plans and in Egypt’s broader industrial ambitions.
For anyone not knee-deep in factory floors, CNC machines – short for Computer Numerical Control – are the quiet workhorses of modern industry. They cut, drill and shape materials with high precision, forming the backbone of sectors from automotive to furniture. When a country builds more of them locally, it doesn’t just add machines; it strengthens the entire supply chain. I’ve seen, time and again, how founders across the MENA region struggle with imported equipment delays and currency swings. It can be a bit of a faff, to be honest.
Founded in 2013 by Ahmed Shaaban and Mohamed Mansour, Simplex began as a tech startup focused on assembling and manufacturing CNC machinery. Since then, it has grown steadily, riding Egypt’s renewed focus on industrial production. The new 40,000-square-metre factory is its second facility, and the company has already laid the foundation stone for a third. That signals this is not a short-term bet but a long game.
The latest plant is expected to double production capacity, improve precision in manufacturing, and shorten delivery times. It should also reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for key components. More than 1,000 direct jobs are projected, alongside over 10,000 indirect roles. In an economy where industrial employment still matters deeply, those numbers are not small change.
During the inauguration, Simplex also unveiled its newest CNC machine under the “Proudly Made in Egypt” label, underlining its export ambitions. “Our vision is to become a major player in the global CNC machinery manufacturing industry. This expansion marks a significant milestone toward that goal, empowering us to meet rising demand and strengthen our international presence,” the company said at the event.
And believe it or not, the expansion is not limited to bricks and mortar. Simplex has signed new partnership and agency agreements in Jordan and Kuwait as part of its regional growth strategy. That move broadens its commercial footprint across Arab markets and aligns with Egypt’s ambition to position itself as a manufacturing hub serving the Middle East, Africa and Europe.
Egypt has made industrial localisation a national priority, aiming to reduce import dependence and develop high-value manufacturing. On paper, this strategy is spot on. The real test, of course, is execution: consistent quality, competitive pricing, and the ability to meet global standards. I reckon this is where companies like Simplex will either shine or stumble.
That said, the signals are promising. Expanding domestic production of complex equipment such as CNC machinery shows growing confidence in Egypt’s industrial base. If Simplex can scale exports while keeping quality tight, it could help reshape perceptions of what “Made in Egypt” stands for.
For entrepreneurs watching from across the region — especially readers who follow Arageek for stories of grit and growth — this is the kind of development that feels more than symbolic. It shows that building deep tech and heavy industry in MENA is not just wishful thinking; it’s happening, factory by factory. And well… that is definately worth keeping an eye on.
