Zain KSA launched an AI-powered ‘Smart Hajj Platform’ for Hajj 1447H.

The system monitors networks in real time and ‘self-heals’ faults.

Over 450 5G towers and 950 Wi-Fi points boost capacity.

More than 1,240 staff, mostly Saudi, support pilgrims in eight languages.

eSIM activation via Nusuk and retail hubs ensure ‘always-on’ connectivity.

As preparations gather pace for Hajj 1447H, Zain KSA has stepped up its digital game with the launch of an AI-powered Smart Hajj Platform, part of a wider technical and field readiness plan aimed at keeping millions of pilgrims seamlessly connected.

The Saudi telecom operator says the move fits squarely within the goals of Vision 2030 and the Pilgrim Experience Programme, which both push for smoother, more reliable services during one of the world’s largest annual gatherings. Anyone who has experienced peak-time congestion during Hajj – or even just tried to send a message from a packed festival – knows how quickly networks can become a bit of a faff. So, I reckon this kind of tech upgrade isn’t just nice to have; it’s essential.

At the core of the preparations is the new Smart Hajj Platform, built on artificial intelligence to manage the network end to end across the holy sites. In simple terms, the system monitors activity in real time, flags potential issues before users feel them, and can even fix certain problems automatically without waiting for engineers to step in. That “self-healing” element, as the industry likes to call it, could make a real difference during high-traffic moments when every second counts.

The platform is also designed to enhance roaming services, which is critical given the international nature of Hajj. Pilgrims arriving from across the globe often rely on their home numbers for updates, maps, and communication with family. By optimising roaming performance and data flows, Zain KSA aims to ensure stable, always-on connectivity, even when demand surges.

All of this runs on a beefed-up infrastructure spanning more than 450 5G towers and over 950 Wi-Fi access points across Makkah, Madinah and the holy sites. That’s a sizeable footprint, and it signals how seriously digital capacity is being treated this season. And believe it or not, the appetite for data keeps growing year after year, driven by live navigation apps, video calls, and digital Hajj guides.

On the ground, the company has mobilised more than 1,240 employees for the season. Notably, 99% of them are Saudi nationals, and women account for 40% of the workforce, a figure that reflects broader workforce shifts happening across the Kingdom. Field teams can assist pilgrims in more than eight languages, and around 60% of frontline staff are trained in first aid, which adds a practical safety layer beyond connectivity.

There’s also a continued partnership with the Nusuk platform, allowing pilgrims to activate eSIMs directly through the app without visiting a branch. It may sound like a small detail, but skipping a physical queue during Hajj can feel like a minor miracle, well… I mean, anyone who has stood in line under the sun will agree. The telecom operator is also supporting government entities with digital solutions for crowd management, mission-critical communications, and broader safety operations.

Retail-wise, Zain KSA maintains over 145 points of sale across key pilgrimage locations, ensuring physical support remains available alongside digital services. That hybrid approach, bricks and bytes, feels spot on for an event of this scale.

From where we sit at Arageek, watching how technology is reshaping traditional experiences across the region, it’s hard not to see Hajj as a powerful testbed for innovation. If systems can perform under the intense pressure of millions moving through a relatively tight geographic space, they can probably perform anywhere. The real proof, of course, will come during the peak days. But on paper, the ambiton to blend AI, 5G and human support into a single, responsive system looks like a serious step forward for the pilgrim experience.
