Algiers-based Gifty launched a unified payments app as cash still “rules” daily life.

Users pay utilities, top-ups and shop online through one digital entry point.

The startup blends a digital wallet with retail outlets, tackling financial inclusion gaps.

Founder Abderrahmane Anemiche aims to evolve Gifty into a full neobank.

B2B tools and “digital gifting” add a human touch to transactions.

Algeria’s fintech scene is quietly picking up pace, and one of the newest names trying to make daily payments less of a faff is Gifty, a startup founded in 2023 by entrepreneur Abderrahmane Anemiche. Based in Algiers, the company has rolled out a unified digital payments platform aimed at simplifying routine transactions in a country where cash still rules much of everyday life.

At its core, Gifty’s mobile app allows users to settle utility bills, electricity, gas, water, as well as internet subscriptions and mobile top-ups, all in one place. No more hopping between counters or juggling different services. On top of that, the app gives access to millions of e-commerce products and connects customers with more than 100 partner retailers across Algeria. It’s an ambitious mix, but one designed to create a single digital entry point for commerce and services.

Anemiche has explained that the broader vision is to build a flexible financial service that can evolve quickly with market needs. Ultimately, the plan is to move towards becoming a neobank, expanding beyond payments into a wider suite of banking-style services. That’s no small step in a market still navigating financial inclusion challenges, but the direction is clear.

The app is available on Android, iOS and Huawei’s AppGallery. It has already surpassed 100,000 downloads on Google Play, not bad at all for a startup that is only a couple of years old. Gifty operates using a digital wallet model. Users can top up their accounts through local bank cards or by visiting partner retail outlets, which means the company combines digital infrastructure with a physical distribution network. In a country where not everyone has easy access to traditional banking, that hybrid approach feels spot on.

I’ve seen first-hand, through conversations with founders across North Africa, how cash dependency can slow down growth for small businesses. It creates friction everywhere, from bookkeeping to customer retention. So when I hear about startups like Gifty trying to bridge this gap, I can’t help but feel a bit chuffed to bits. It’s these practical solutions, not just shiny apps, that can shift habits over time.

Beyond everyday payments, Gifty has added a digital gifting feature. Users can send credit to friends and family, dressed up with personalised images, videos or GIFs. It turns a simple transfer into something a little more human. And believe it or not, that small emotional layer can make digital payments feel less transactional and more social.

The company is also building out business-to-business tools. These include multi-brand gift cards, loyalty programmes and incentive platforms, with analytics dashboards that allow companies to track campaign performance. For retailers and corporates looking to engage customers or reward staff, this could open new doors. Whether the appetite is there at scale remains to be seen, but the infrastructure is taking shape.

Financial inclusion continues to be one of Africa’s biggest structural hurdles. On the flip side, it also represents one of its biggest opportunities. I reckon platforms like Gifty definately have a role to play if they can earn trust and deliver reliability, two things that matter more than flashy branding.

For readers who follow Arageek and care about how entrepreneurship is reshaping the region, Gifty is another example of local founders stepping up to solve local problems. No grand promises, just an attempt to make paying your bills and shopping online a bit easier. Sometimes, that’s exactly where real change begins.
