Thereâs been a big shake-up in Egyptâs JobTech scene. BasharSoftâthe parent company of Wuzzuf and Forasna, two names practically synonymous with online recruitment hereâhas officially snapped up iCareer, one of the countryâs largest employment and career services providers. Not just that, the deal includes Recruitera, Egyptâs first homegrown applicant tracking system. If you ask me, thatâs a pretty smart move in a job market thatâs changing faster than a cab fare during rush hour.
The acquisition is more than a simple merger; itâs BasharSoftâs ticket to play on a bigger regional stage. The company quietly set up shop in Saudi Arabia earlier this year as part of a wider push across the GCC and beyond. With iCareerâs feet-on-the-ground experience and BasharSoftâs tech muscle, theyâre now eyeing millions more job seekers and employers across the Middle East and Africa. I reckon itâs a classic case of one plus one equalling three.
BasharSoftâs record is nothing to sniff at. Founded back in 2009, itâs already connected over nine million job seekers to around a hundred thousand employers, with roughly 1.4 million successful hires along the way. Its portfolio covers everything from online job boards to recruitment software and employability trainingâbasically the full works for a modern labour market.
iCareer, on the other hand, brings serious pedigree in workforce development. Since its founding in 2012, itâs partnered with leading universities like Ain Shams, the AUC, and the Arab Academy, alongside heavyweights such as Vodafone, PepsiCo, and Procter & Gambleânot to mention global agencies like the UN and GIZ. Theyâve been quietly powering national-scale programmes to help young Egyptians land decent jobs. Honestly, itâs the kind of work that doesnât always make headlines but makes all the difference.
Ameer Sherif, BasharSoftâs co-founder and executive chairman, called the merger a âpowerful synergy,â highlighting the ambition to become a go-to private partner for governments on employment policy. He spoke about tackling unemployment at scale with smarter job matching, better data, and upskilling based on real market demand. If that sounds lofty, well⊠I mean, it kinda isâbut the potentialâs there.
From iCareerâs side, CEO Akram Marwan said joining forces with BasharSoft means their reach just exploded tenfold. He pointed out how shifts in AI and remote work have turned the job market upside down, so being able to guide both youth and employers through that transition is now more vital than ever.
One particularly interesting bit is Recruitera, the in-house applicant tracking software that BasharSoftâs acquiring as part of the deal. Itâll be integrated into Wuzzuf and Forasna, giving employers a smoother hiring process and better analytics. For universities, the partnership means students can gain not only employability training but also direct access to the job marketâspot on alignment, really.
BasharSoftâs now aiming to reach 100 million people by 2030, partly through more acquisitions in Egypt and the region. Internally, theyâre set to grow their team by another hundred and target $25 million in revenue. And with AI baked into their platforms to simplify job posting and profile creation, the hiring process could soon be far less of a faff for everyone involved.
At Arageek, weâve long been watching how Egyptian startups mature into regional powerhouses. This particular move feels like a natural progressionâone that might just see BasharSoft standing shoulder to shoulder with the biggest HCM (Human Capital Management) players in the MEA region. Itâs an exciting reminder of whatâs possible when local innovation meets bold ambition, even if the journeyâs definately still unfolding.
