Sustainable Emirati startup Bloomspoon has just clinched an investment deal worth 800,000 dirhams during the third season of "Shark Tank Dubai". In return for this sizeable chunk of cash, they've given away 49% equity to Tawfik Kreidieh, CEO and co-founder of the widely-known retailer The Brands for Less (BFL Group).

Bloomspoon's pretty unique in what they do—it's actually the first brand globally to offer cutlery you can plant in your garden. Sounds a bit bonkers at first, doesn't it? Imagine finishing your takeaway, then instead of chucking those knives and forks in the bin, you pop them into a pot on your windowsill or in the garden. Turns out they’re made from wheat straw and come with dissolvable seed capsules to grow herbs like mint or basil afterwards. It’s a rather nifty way of replacing single-use plastics and encouraging greener lifestyles.

With this fresh boost in funds, Bloomspoon plans to ramp up their production lines, branch out to new markets, increase their retail presence, and even aim for B Corp certification. For those of you not yet familiar with B Corp, it’s a rigorous global standard recognising companies that carefully balance profit with purpose—so it’s a commendable milestone.

You can't deny the neat timing of Bloomspoon’s green ethos—especially now that sustainability is something none of us can afford to ignore. Projects like this tend to strike a chord with customers fed up with the mountain of plastic waste. And who wouldn’t prefer rowing their own basil rather than chucking yet another fork in the bin?

Anyway, good luck to them—we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on Bloomspoon’s next move here at Arageek. It's encourgaing to see businesses genuinely making an effort to change things for the better.
