Tafweela has launched an NFC “sticker” to digitise toll payments across Egypt.

The service covers 300+ gates, replacing cash with instant, secure transactions.

Tolls make up 10–15% of costs; a real-time dashboard tracks spending.

More than 1.

3 million vehicles, including solo drivers, can recharge via Instapay.

The 2024 startup aims to modernise fleet payments and cut “financial leakage”.

Egypt’s roads are busy at the best of times. For logistics companies, every minute stuck at a toll gate or weigh station is money quietly slipping away. So when a startup steps in to shave off that friction, people tend to pay attention.

Tafweela, an Egyptian platform focused on fleet and logistics payment management, has rolled out a new service that digitises road toll and weigh station payments using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. The system is available not only to large fleet operators but also to individual truck owners, which, in a market like Egypt, is no small detail.

Instead of fumbling with cash at toll booths, drivers can now use an NFC “sticker” to make payments instantly. The service covers more than 300 toll gates across national highways and key transport routes in the country, aiming to make journeys smoother and, frankly, less of a faff. For an industry that still relies heavily on cash, this shift feels long overdue.

Road toll fees typically account for between 10% and 15% of a transport company’s operating costs. That is a sizeable chunk. By turning these payments digital, Tafweela is positioning what used to be an administrative headache into something closer to a manageble line item. Through a real-time dashboard, companies can track spending, monitor transactions, and reduce the risk of financial leakage. And believe it or not, even small inefficiencies at scale can quietly eat into profits.

Marwan El Shayeb, founder and CEO of Tafweela, has said the goal is to remove the complications of cash handling and paper-based settlements. According to his comments, the system enables instant and secure payments, cuts waiting times at toll gates, and gives operators clearer oversight of their expenses. For fleet managers juggling dozens, sometimes hundreds, of vehicles, that kind of visibility can be spot on.

On the flip side, the service isn’t only targeting the big players. Egypt’s transport sector includes more than 1.3 million vehicles, many of them owned by individuals or small operators. Tafweela allows these drivers to recharge their NFC stickers via the Instapay app, making access relatively simple. That inclusivity aligns with the country’s broader push for financial inclusion and digital transformation under Egypt Vision 2030.

I’ve seen, over the years, how small transport operators often feel left out of tech upgrades designed for corporate fleets. At Arageek, we’ve always believed that empowering startups should also mean empowering the ecosystems around them, and that includes the solo truck owner trying to keep margins steady. In that sense, this move feels like a step in the right direction.

Founded in 2024 as the first startup incubated and funded by the T-Vencubator Fund, Tafweela set out to modernise vehicle-related payments in Egypt. By 2025, it had doubled its transaction volume, driven by a growing customer base and wider adoption of its services. Not bad at all for a relatively young company navigating a traditionally cash-heavy sector.

The new toll and weigh station solution adds to Tafweela’s broader aim: giving business owners and drivers a way to manage trips and expenses with a single click, while maintaining solid financial safeguards. I reckon if execution matches ambition, this could be one of those quiet infrastructure upgrades that, over time, changes how the entire sector operates. And in logistics, those quiet changes often make the loudest difference.
