Uber is edging closer to what could become one of the biggest food delivery deals we’ve ever seen. The US ride-hailing giant is in advanced negotiations to acquire Germany’s Delivery Hero SE for around €12.5 billion, a move that would seriously reshape the global delivery market.
Delivery Hero confirmed on 14 July that talks with Uber are at an “advanced” stage, with the potential takeover priced at roughly €33 per share. The market did not waste time reacting — Delivery Hero’s stock jumped sharply after the news broke. And frankly, it’s not hard to see why.
Uber is not coming in cold. It already owns about 19.5% of Delivery Hero and holds options for a further 5.6%. Earlier this year, it also bought a 4.5% stake from Prosus, the investment arm of South African media group Naspers. The groundwork, in other words, has been quietly building for a while.
Back in May 2026, Delivery Hero revealed it had received an indicative, non-binding proposal valuing the company between €10 billion and €11.6 billion — also at €33 per share. The current €12.5 billion headline figure sits above that earlier range, which suggests negotiations have moved up a gear.
For anyone following the sector, this feels like a big moment. Delivery Hero operates across Europe, Asia and the Middle East, with brands such as Lieferando holding strong positions in several European markets. In MENA, where the quick commerce race has been particularly intense, the company has built out infrastructure to deliver groceries and convenience items in minutes, not hours. That kind of network is not built overnight — it takes capital, patience and a strong stomach.
If the acquisition goes through, Uber would significantly tighten its grip on Europe and expand its footprint across Asia and the Middle East. It would also gain deeper exposure to quick commerce, the fast-growing model focused on near-instant grocery delivery. On the flip side, Uber’s main rival DoorDash has been expanding aggressively, so this could be seen as a defensive move as much as an offensive one.
There is, of course, the regulatory elephant in the room. European antitrust authorities have not always been chuffed to bits about large consolidation plays, especially when consumer choice is at stake. A combined Uber-Delivery Hero entity could hold dominant positions in several countries. Regulators may require divestments or other concessions — and that could turn out to be a bit of a faff for both sides.
Still, shareholders who held on through Delivery Hero’s rough patches in recent years will likely see this as a meaningful premium at €33 per share. After a period when valuations in tech and delivery were under real pressure, such a move signals renewed appetite for scale.
From a MENA startup lens — and I say this having watched our regional players hustle for every percentage point of market share — this deal, if finalised, definately sets a new benchmark for ambition. It shows that global players still see long-term value in logistics, data and last-mile execution. I reckon the financing structure will be key: whether Uber leans on cash, shares, or a mix of both could influence investor appetite in the days ahead.
Nothing is signed just yet. But if an agreement lands in the coming days, it could cement Uber’s position as the dominant force spanning ride-hailing and delivery worldwide. And that, like it or not, would redraw the competitive map in one swift move.
