It’s not every day you see a telecom giant roll up its sleeves to give the local startup scene a nudge in the right direction. Yet that’s exactly what’s happening in Saudi Arabia, where Zain KSA has just launched the Zain Great Idea 2025 (ZGI 2025) accelerator. The aim’s clear as day: empower ambitious entrepreneurs and tech startups so they can stand shoulder to shoulder with global heavyweights. If you ask me, it’s spot on timing, as the Kingdom continues its big push towards a knowledge-based economy, all in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
There’s something I find particularly refreshing here—ZGI 2025 isn’t just your regular accelerator. For the first time, Saudi startups will be whisked off on a fully funded programme in Silicon Valley. That’s not just a bit of a faff; it’s a genuine leg up for early-stage ventures who might otherwise struggle to get international exposure. Over 14 jam-packed days, these founders will get stuck in, working with industry veterans, soaking up wisdom through mentoring and workshops, while mingling with other hungry minds across the globe.
I remember when we first kicked off Arageek—finding genuine support felt like hunting for a needle in a haystack. Programmes like this can make all the difference, especially when you’re still living on coffee and late nights. That said, it’s not all glitz and glam. The journey’s as tough as old boots, and only those who really want it will make it through the bootcamp and pitching rounds.
Eman Abdullah Al-Saidi, who heads up Corporate Communications at Zain KSA, summed it up well: empowering entrepreneurs is more than a nice headline—it’s a “direct investment in the future of the Kingdom’s digital economy.” She also pointed out that plugging into Zain Group’s wider network, including investment and technology teams, means Saudi startups get access to more than just advice; they’re stepping into a real-world business and tech ecosystem, and that opens doors.
On the flip side, Zain Ventures—the Group’s investment arm—will be on hand, giving startups a shot at direct conversations with investors and global partners. That could be a gamechanger for founders tired of the endless cold email routine. Plus, ZainTECH plans to offer big tech muscle, rolling out support in areas like cloud, artificial intelligence, robotics and analytics. If you’re a founder with something innovative up your sleeve, that level of support doesn’t come around every day, you know?
Applications are already open for Saudi-based startups and hopeful entrepreneurs at zaingreatidea.com, and you’ve got until 20th September 2025 to throw your hat in the ring. After the initial selection, there’s bootcamp training to tackle, followed by a pitching session to a panel who’ll decide who gets the Silicon Valley ticket. Once the international leg is done and dusted, participants still get a hand from mentors, with the chance to showcase their progress to potential investors and, maybe, even form commercial partnerships with Zain itself.
All in all, I reckon this sort of hands-on, forward-thinking approach could help put Saudi startups on the map in a way that’s not just for show. Sure—it’s definately going to be a slog for those taking part. But as I’ve learnt from the startup grind, sometimes those crazy, exhausting opportunities are exactly what propel you from the back of the pack to the front. And believe it or not, the ecosystem across the MENA region is just warming up.
