It seems Abu Dhabi’s aviation scene just got a serious tech upgrade. Abu Dhabi Airports, Al Hail Holding, and fintech platform Xare have teamed up on a new project that’s tipped to transform how travellers pay and move around the capital’s airports. They’ve signed an MoU to roll out a regulated digital wallet—essentially a “tourist wallet”—that will be piloted at Zayed International Airport. The idea? Make every step of a visitor’s journey smoother, safer, and totally cash-free.
The plan fits neatly into the UAE’s digital economy vision and Abu Dhabi’s 2030 economic strategy, both of which aim to position the country as a leader in fintech and smart mobility. Personally, I reckon this is a spot-on move. Travellers are hungry for quick, fuss-free ways to pay, and if you’ve ever rummaged around for small change at a foreign airport, you’ll know exactly why this matters.
Elena Sorlini, who heads Abu Dhabi Airports, said airports are no longer just gateways but platforms for digital commerce. She mentioned the partnership would test new payment technologies designed to make travel more sustainable and accessible. On the flip side, Al Hail Holding’s CEO, Hamad Jassim Al Darwish, said the collaboration dovetails beautifully with the UAE’s broader ambition to grow a modern, diversified economy through smarter financial solutions. And Xare’s co-founder Milind Singh described it as “bringing the future of travel commerce to life”—a bit of a mouthful, but you get the point.
The project doesn’t end with finance. The partners plan to tackle transport efficiency and sustainability by integrating AI systems, greener infrastructure, and intelligent traffic technologies. So, it’s not just about spending money—it’s also about how people and goods move more intelligently through the airport ecosystem. A joint steering committee will keep the show on the road, with Abu Dhabi Airports handling infrastructure and integration, Al Hail managing regulation and finance, and Xare plugging in the tech magic.
What I really like here is how it turns an airport—often thought of as a stressful in-between place—into a gateway for innovation. It’s the kind of thinking we at Arageek like to see: practical, future-facing, and built on collaboration. It might sound ambitious now, but believe it or not, a few years down the line we might all be using similar digital wallets as soon as we step off a plane. The UAE’s knack for testing bold ideas like this never fails to impress… even if, occasionally, things take a wee bit longer than planned (we’ve all been there, right?). In any case, this move sets the stage for a new era of travel convenience—and that’s something to be chuffed about.
