Algeria is amping up its investments in the startup scene, preparing to roll out specialised investment funds aimed at boosting around 20,000 young companies by 2029, according to Nourddine Ouaddah, the Minister for Knowledge Economy, Startups, and Small Enterprises.
In a recent interview with the newspaper Al Sharq, Ouaddah highlighted how the Algerian government is stepping up its efforts to tackle common financial hurdles by expanding funding sources. Collaborating closely with the energy sector, they're preparing two new funds—one tailored towards traditional energy technologies and another concentrating on renewable energy sources. All this comes hot on the heels of the recently launched fund focused on artificial intelligence, ICT, and tech innovation.
But there's more: Algeria isn’t doing this alone. They've partnered up with international institutions, such as the Islamic Development Bank Group, to establish funds meeting international standards. The idea, first and foremost, is to boost local startups and propel them onto foreign markets, particularly across African countries and the Arab region.
Just recently, state-owned Algerian telecom heavyweight Algérie Télécom unveiled a multimillion-dollar fund, worth about 11 million US dollars. This new move specifically targets startups focusing on artificial intelligence, cyber security, and robotics. The end goal here is ambitious—they're planning to support the creation of 20,000 fresh enterprises, while at the same time pouring exciting new investments into universities and incubators dedicated to AI.
Honestly, if you've been tuning into Arageek lately, you'll know the tech startup vibe across North Africa is buzzing right now, and it's clear Algeria doesn't want to get left behind. With all these announcements, it looks like Algeria is serioulsy committed to creating a dynamic business landscape, great news for entrepreneurs looking for a leg-up in the region.
