Egypt’s homegrown ride-hailing sector just got a bit of a jolt, as Arrw, the country’s first fully licensed smart mobility app, has secured a healthy $3 million in fresh funding from local investors. This isn’t the end of the road for their current investment round either – it remains open, suggesting more cash could be coming down the track.
Arrw plans to use the new funds to shift gears beyond its initial pilot in Alexandria, with ambitions to launch in Cairo and other major cities across Egypt. There’s a keen appetite, too: despite a flurry of improvements in Egypt’s transport infrastructure – I mean, anyone who’s seen the new ring road will know what I’m talking about – there still honestly aren’t enough smart transport apps to go round. So, it’s hardly surprising that nimble solutions like this are starting to find their feet.
Arrw has made a name for itself by leaning heavily on artificial intelligence, especially in tech, engineering, and day-to-day operations. Even with pretty limited resources, the team has managed to get this far by maximising what they’ve got. That’s a story I keep coming back to in my work with Arageek – the brilliant way startups in our region make things work, even when the odds are stacked against them.
Speaking about the latest milestones, one of the company’s co-founders described the investment as a boost of confidence from their partners in the Egyptian market, adding, “Our pilot run in Alexandria was full of lessons, and now we’re ready to take Arrw to the next level – from street to street and city to city. It’s a truly Egyptian service, for Egyptian streets.” That attitude, spot on if you ask me, feels like the kind of bold local thinking that Egypt’s ecosystem tends to reward.
Looking ahead, forecasts suggest that Egypt’s smart mobility market could grow at a rate of 7.76% each year over the next five years. By 2030, the sector could claim nearly 36 million users, up from 23.6% penetration in 2025 to a projected 28.1%. In other words, there’s everything to play for.
Arrw’s system is built on some serious technology, including real-time data analysis and a logistics network designed to keep things both smooth and safe. There’s investment, too, in hiring skilled talent and dreaming up new AI-based features – not just to improve the app and keep users happy, but to up the ante on safety. These AI tools, all built by Egyptian engineers, help the platform monitor activity with, believe it or not, advanced image and video analysis. The aim? To catch problems before they snowball, building trust for both passengers and drivers.
Now, I have to admit, there’s still a bit of a faff when it comes to getting everyone on board with Egyptian-built apps – some folks prefer international names, for whatever reason. But on the flip side, seeing Egyptian engineers at the heart of this project gives me hope that local solutions really are up to scratch. If you ask me, it’s high time Egypt leads the pack in its own transport revolution – and if Arrw pulls this off, I’ll be chuffed to bits, even if they’ve got a long road still ahead.
