Burgan Bank's upgraded SoftPOS now accepts credit card payments via smartphone, aiding Kuwait's cashless future.
The service aligns with Kuwait Vision 2035 by simplifying payments for small, mobile businesses.
Backed by K-NET, SoftPOS offers end-to-end encrypted transactions, enhancing security.
The upgrade supports the shift to a digital economy and eases operations for mobile businesses.
SoftPOS complements Burgan's digital transformation, positioning the bank as a regional tech trendsetter.
Burgan Bank has taken another step towards Kuwait’s cashless future, rolling out an upgraded version of its SoftPOS service that now lets merchants accept credit card payments straight from a smartphone. It already worked with debit and prepaid cards, but adding credit cards brings the whole thing much closer to a full replacement for those bulky POS machines we all know too well. I reckon many small businesses will be chuffed to bits with that.
What stood out to me is how this fits neatly into the bigger picture of Kuwait Vision 2035. At Arageek we’ve heard plenty of founders complain that getting modern payment tools can be a bit of a faff, especially for home businesses and on‑the‑go traders. So a smartphone-based terminal that works anywhere and doesn’t need extra hardware? That’s spot on for anyone trying to keep costs lean.
The bank highlighted that SoftPOS is backed by K-NET and comes loaded with security features that follow the Central Bank of Kuwait’s cyber standards. Transactions are encrypted end to end, which, believe it or not, is still something not all mobile payment solutions in the region have fully nailed. On the flip side, security alone doesn’t win hearts, but mobility and flexibility usually do.
Abdullah Hussain Al-Maqseed, who manages merchant acquiring at Burgan Bank, said the update supported the country’s shift towards a digital economy and made day-to-day operations easier for businesses that naturally move around. And honestly, having seen startups at pop-up markets trying to juggle cash boxes and card readers that run out of battery… well, I mean, this feels like progress.
SoftPOS is also wrapped into Burgan’s wider digital transformation push. The bank, established back in 1977, has grown into a major player in corporate and retail banking, with subsidiaries from Algeria to Turkey. It’s known for touting tech upgrades, and it shows — from LEED certifications to a string of ISO standards under its belt. Quite a mouthful, but it does explain why they keep positioning themselves as a trendsetter across the region.
Merchants curious about the service can find more details on Burgan Bank’s website or reach customer support directly. And if you ask me, this kind of tool might finally give some of Kuwait’s SMEs the confidence to ditch cash for good, even if the transition is, admittedly, not always the smootest.
