Dubai has launched "The Future of AI in Government Services" accelerator programme.

AI startups from around the globe can collaborate with Dubai’s government to improve public services.

Participants will work with decision-makers, with travel and accommodation costs covered.

Startups retain intellectual property and gain opportunities to expand locally and internationally.

The initiative highlights Dubai’s commitment to being at the forefront of AI innovation.

It looks like Dubai is making bold moves in the AI space—again. The Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DCAI), working hand in hand with the Dubai Future Accelerators from the Dubai Future Foundation, has just thrown open registration for the second round of its flagship accelerator. They've called it “The Future of AI in Government Services”. If you ask me, the name says it all: they’re not just tinkering around the edges, but aiming to reshape how people experience public services in this city.

I’ve seen various accelerator programmes come and go across the MENA region, but this one feels a bit different. For starters, it’s a global invitation. AI startups—whether rooted in Dubai’s own backyard or hailing from somewhere else entirely—are officially welcome to jump in. The focus? Setting up clever partnerships with government bodies to develop proper AI solutions that make public services less of a faff for residents. Honestly, anything making life smoother for people trying to access government services in this day and age is spot on, in my view.

Up for grabs are some decent perks, too. Startups get to keep 100% of their intellectual property (that’s not always the way, to be fair), plus travel and accommodation in Dubai are fully covered for the whole eight-week run of the programme. Now, for entrepreneurs across the region—particularly those tackling advanced tech—having the costs taken care of means you can focus squarely on innovation, rather than worrying about where your next meal’s coming from, you know?

But here’s where it gets interesting: participants will have the chance to work shoulder-to-shoulder with actual government decision-makers. It’s not just about theoretical exercises, but real-world collaboration to rethink and re-engineer public services with AI. I reckon a lot of places talk a big game about public-private partnership, but this accelerator is giving founders a seat at the table to test things out and, hopefully, create tools people will actually use. Plus, there’s the added bonus of direct routes to expand both locally and further afield—no need to bang your head against the wall looking for contacts.

It’s telling that so much attention is being given to attracting global brains and keeping innovation flowing here. From what I've observed at Arageek, the energy buzzing through MENA’s startup ecosystem often comes from these genuine opportunities to get hands-on with big, tangible challenges. I mean, yes, Dubai always wants to be at the front of the tech pack—but they’re not leaving things to chance.

So, if you happen to be sitting on an idea that could transform how governments work—or if you just fancy seeing if your AI product stands up in a city like Dubai—now might be the time to throw your hat in the ring. As ever, the devil will be in the detail, but this looks like a proper shot for AI talent to make its mark in the public sector, not just chase the usual commercial gigs. And let’s be honest: that’s something worth being chuffed to bits about (even if, like me, you sometimes struggle with the paperwork).
