Khidmah, the Abu Dhabi-based facilities management company, has teamed up with local tech outfit K2 to give the rather old-school world of building maintenance a smart new edge. The pair signed the agreement during GITEX GLOBAL 2025 in Dubai, an event thatās become a bit of a playground for regional innovators. The aim here? To roll out robotics and artificial intelligence across Khidmahās service portfolio covering everything from housing and retail to schools and government buildings.
If youāve ever dealt with FM operations, youāll know it can be a bit of a faffāroutine inspections, cleaning hard-to-reach corners, never-ending maintenance logs. What Khidmah and K2 are now planning could be a game-changer. The collaboration will see AI tools assessing equipment performance and predicting issues before they happen, autonomous robots handling high-risk or repetitive jobs, and data platforms providing real-time updates for smarter decision-making. Sounds clever, right?
Naser Barhoum, Khidmahās CEO, said that innovationās become non-negotiable for the company, especially as clients expect safer, greener and more efficient solutions. He noted that teaming up with K2 would help redefine what operational excellence looks like in this industry. On the flip side, Sean Teo from K2 said robotics and AI donāt replace people but free them up to focus on creative or more human-centred workāwhich, I reckon, is spot on. He added that the collaboration could set new benchmarks in the FM field as AI becomes deeply integrated in daily service delivery.
Behind the glossy buzzwords, thereās a serious intent here: cutting costs by optimising planning, using automation to reduce downtime, and boosting safety across the board. Together, Khidmahās on-the-ground experience and K2ās tech know-how seem a solid combo for bringing futuristic FM tools into everyday use.
Itās also part of Khidmahās wider digital transformation journey. The firm has already managed more than 100 projects across the UAE and beyond, covering over 18,000 contracted unitsāfrom sprawling commercial complexes to private villas by the coast (and yes, they even provide lifeguards to more than 60 kilometres of beaches). Meanwhile, K2ās robotics and longevity systems are designed for precision and adaptabilityāa sign that Abu Dhabiās tech ambitions arenāt slowing down anytime soon.
As someone who spends a fair bit of time around MENAās startup scene here at Arageek, I find collaborations like this genuinely encouraging. They show that even traditional sectors are waking up to AIās potential, not just as a buzzword but as a practical tool. And, believe it or not, many small or mid-sized FM firms could soon be following suitāonce the tech becomes more affordable and, well⦠less intimidating.
So yes, itās early days for this partnership, but it has all the right ingredients: ambition, expertise, and a dash of regional pride. Iām definatley curious to see whether it delivers on its promise to make facilities management not just smarter, but genuinely more human in how it operates.
