Nokia Debuts R&D Centre in Saudi Arabia to Drive AI and 6G Innovations

Nokia has opened its first Saudi R&D centre in Riyadh, focused on AI-powered networks.

Nokia has opened its first dedicated research and development centre in Saudi Arabia, setting up in Riyadh with a clear eye on AI-powered network automation, energy efficiency and future 6G technologies. The facility, which opened on 1 September 2026, comes through cooperation with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and marks a notable step away from simply selling telecoms technology into the Kingdom towards actually building parts of it there.

At the heart of the new centre is software for more autonomous telecoms networks. In plain terms, Nokia wants networks to do more of the heavy lifting on their own — spotting faults, adjusting settings, optimising performance and, in some cases, even fixing problems without constant manual input from operators. The work in Riyadh will cover service management and orchestration, self-organising networks, Autopilot technologies and rApps, all of which sit inside this wider push to make networks smarter and less of a faff to run.

That said, the centre is not only about fancy automation. Energy efficiency is a major piece of the plan too. According to comments from Nokia’s regional leadership reported by Asharq Bloomberg, the company is aiming to cut network energy bills by around 10% to 15% using automation and optimisation tools. It is also working on technologies that could reduce the space and energy needs of telecom facilities by roughly 30%, which is spot on for an industry facing denser networks, rising data traffic and the extra strain coming from AI workloads.

There is also a longer game here. Nokia says the Riyadh operation will extend beyond today’s mobile systems into AI-native 6G research. This does not mean a commercial 6G rollout is suddenly around the corner — not even close — but it does give Saudi-based engineers a place in the early development of next-generation communications infrastructure, where AI is expected to be deeply built into the architecture from the start.

For readers at Arageek, this part feels especially worth watching. I’ve seen for years how startup ecosystems in the region get chuffed to bits when global firms open local offices, but an R&D centre is a different beast. It usually means engineering jobs, software work, training and, if things go well, intellectual property that does not just stay on a slide deck. I reckon that matters more than the shiny 6G label.

Nokia says the centre will create opportunities across engineering and R&D, while also offering training programmes, bootcamps and specialised certifications in AI and automation. The broader idea is to combine Nokia’s global telecoms know-how with Saudi engineering talent, which fits neatly with Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s push to grow domestic strength in AI, cloud, data centres and communications.

The ministry said the move supports efforts to localise advanced research capabilities, build national expertise in AI and software, and create technologies that can serve international markets. And believe it or not, Nokia is already pointing to practical local experience as part of that story. The company highlighted work with stc during the 2026 Hajj season, where networks face sharp traffic swings and huge concentrations of users in limited areas. Those conditions make a solid real-world test bed for automation tools designed to improve efficiency, energy use and user experience.

Nokia is unveiling the centre during LEAP 2026 in Riyadh, where it is also showcasing standalone mobile networks, AI-enabled network operations, data centres and wider communications infrastructure. The timing makes sense. As AI adoption grows, telecom operators are under pressure from both sides: networks need to support more data-hungry AI services, while AI itself is becoming central to managing network complexity.

On the flip side, the real test will come later. Announcements like this can sound grand — well… I mean, they often do — but what counts is output. Saudi-developed software, patents, local engineering hires, commercial deployments and maybe exports to Nokia customers elsewhere will be the clearest signs of whether this strategy is working. If those results appear, the Riyadh centre could become a definatley important marker that Saudi Arabia is moving further up the telecoms value chain, from major buyer to genuine builder of advanced communications technology.
