Novo Nordisk is teaming up with Amazon Web Services in a strategic push to speed up drug discovery and upgrade its operations with AI and cloud technology. The partnership, announced in August 2026, also includes a co-innovation hub in London, where engineers and scientists from both sides are working together to shorten the journey from identifying a drug target to reaching the first human dose.
It is the sort of move that shows how big pharma is no longer treating AI like a shiny extra. Instead, it is becoming part of the engine room. And believe it or not, that shift matters well beyond healthcare. Under the agreement, Novo Nordisk has picked AWS as its preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner. The idea is to combine Novo Nordisk’s long-standing knowledge in chronic diseases with AWS’s cloud infrastructure, AI services and life sciences tools. Among the technologies named are Amazon Bio Discovery and Amazon Bedrock, which will be used to identify drug targets, design therapies more quickly, and connect genomic, imaging and clinical data so earlier research can better shape clinical trials.
Mike Doustdar, president and CEO of Novo Nordisk, said the partnership is about making AI a driver of innovation across the company. He said combining Novo Nordisk’s scientific expertise with AWS tools and services for life sciences, alongside the dedicated hub in London, should help accelerate discovery and support the development of responsible AI solutions for people living with serious chronic diseases.
AWS chief executive Matt Garman framed it in similarly practical terms. He said the work comes back to getting the right medicine to patients faster, adding that services such as Amazon Bio Discovery and Amazon Bedrock, together with AWS Forward Deployed Engineers and Novo Nordisk’s science teams, are expected to compress discovery timelines, process complex datasets securely and scale findings across therapeutic areas.
There are already some measurable results from the tie-up. Novo Nordisk said the collaboration has helped reduce the time spent on clinical documentation and has supported more than 25,000 employees in improving productivity. The new deal builds on an existing relationship, but this time the structure looks more formal and more ambitious, with AWS also set to provide the secure foundations for turning ideas into therapies on a global scale.
Another piece of the plan involves Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, which Novo Nordisk will use to introduce AI agents across its operations. In simple words, these are systems designed to handle tasks with less manual input, which could take some of the faff out of repetitive processes inside a company this size. I reckon that is where the less glamorous but very real value often sits.
On the flip side, these partnerships are not just about laboratory research. Novo Nordisk also works with several Amazon businesses tied to healthcare, including Amazon Pharmacy, Amazon Ads and Amazon One Medical, to change how therapies are marketed and delivered to patients. That wider ecosystem could prove spot on for a company looking to connect research, operations and patient access in one flow.
Novo Nordisk, founded in 1923 and headquartered in Denmark, employs about 66,700 people across 80 countries and markets its products in around 170 countries. The company is best known for its heritage in diabetes, but its broader focus is serious chronic diseases. AWS, for its part, has spent years building out cloud and AI tools across industries, and it is now pushing harder into life sciences as demand grows for secure, scalable systems that can handle huge volumes of research data.
I still remember startup founders in the region telling me that the hardest bit is not the idea, it is shaving months off execution. In a strange way, this feels like the same story, just on a much bigger stage. If the London hub delivers what both companies expect, it could become a textbook example of how AI moves from buzzword to business tool — and, more importantly, maybe to better medicines. That is a big promise, definately, but one many in the sector will watch closely.
