It looks like the Moroccan tech scene is heating up once again, and I’d say Ora Technologies is leading the charge. The Casablanca-based super-app has just taken a bold step by acquiring Cathedis, a well-known last-mile delivery company in the local market. The deal hasn’t had its value disclosed, but what's clear is this move gives Ora a real edge as it looks to stitch together Morocco’s e-commerce, logistics, and fintech worlds—pretty spot on, if you ask me.
Founded in 2023 by Omar Alami, Ora has wasted no time making itself heard. The company’s multifunctional app lets users move money, shop, order food, connect with others, and more—all in one place. Their food delivery platform, Kooul, has snatched up more than 15,000 active clients within just 10 months. Not bad at all! Then there’s ORA Cash, their universal wallet, which impressively cracked 50,000 accounts in half a year. That’s especially relevant in Morocco, where cash-on-devilery still stubbornly refuses to go away, making digital payment adoption a bit of a faff but also an attractive target.
The timing of this acquisition is no co-incidence. Ora bagged $1.9 million in pre-Series A funding back in March, not long before netting another $7.5 million at Series A in July. Quite simply, they raised the money to scale up delivery and digital payments—and scooping up Cathedis seems a natural fit. Cathedis itself is no slouch, having closed its own round earlier this year and built a solid track record in last-mile logistics.
By snapping up Cathedis, Ora now controls a big piece of the puzzle: it can blend its payment tools, e-commerce platform, and delivery service into a seamless, in-house experience for businesses and ordinary users. That means customers should be able to order, pay, and get products without any of the usual headaches—well… at least, that’s the plan. For those of us at Arageek who are always hoping to energise and empower north African startups, seeing so many moving parts come together like this is absolutely fascinating.
On the flip side, I reckon there’s always a risk when ambitious startups try to be a jack of all trades. Can Ora really give each piece the attention it deserves, or will something slip through the net? Only time will tell, but you can’t help but feel a bit chuffed to see this level of local ambition.
At the end of the day, Ora Technologies is placing a big bet on Morocco’s digital future, tying together payment, logistics, and e-commerce in ways that should benefit customers and merchants alike. And believe it or not, with deals like this, Morocco’s startup scene is no longer waiting in the wings—it’s stepping right into the limelight.
