Founder's vision: Transform Arabic business tasks and establish a comprehensive AI ecosystem.
When it comes to Arabic, artificial intelligence hasn’t always measured up. Tech tools that shine bright elsewhere jitter and stumble when faced with the complexities of this rich language—until now, it seems. Tarjama, a UAE-based language tech company and one of the few genuine pioneers in Arabic AI, has just bagged a tidy $15 million in Series A funding. Global Ventures led the charge, with other notable investors joining in, including Wamda Capital, TA Ventures, Phaze Ventures, Golden Gate Ventures, and Endeavor Catalyst.
Set up back in 2008 by Nour Al Hassan, Tarjama started off life mainly handling translations. But over the years, it's grown into an AI powerhouse that specialises in solving tricky Arabic language challenges for companies across the Middle East and beyond. Their crown jewel is Pronoia, an advanced Arabic-focused Large Language Model (LLM). According to Tarjama, Pronoia doesn’t just match those high-profile western AI models we've heard so much chatter about lately—like OpenAI’s GPT-4o or Cohere—it actually outperforms them significantly when handling Arabic tasks, offering improved accuracy, security, and cost efficiency. Not your average chatbot then, by any stretch of the imagination.
Building on this momentum, Tarjama recently introduced Arabic.AI, an innovative platform that harnesses the latest version of Pronoia to help Middle Eastern enterprises tackle complex business operations far quicker. They claim to slash day-long Arabic business tasks down to just a few minutes, potentially revolutionising how businesses operate here. And they're not stopping there: plans are already underway to set up an AI Academy, aimed at training hundreds of enterprise notables and government leaders who might otherwise find themselves left out of the AI rush.
Business-wise, things look healthy—Tarjama says they’re already turning a profit and enjoying steady growth, to the tune of 20% each year. They’ve expanded their footprint into over 30 international markets, meaning the new funding can be used for further regional and global expansion, doubling their research teams, and scaling up their tech infrastructure. Solid plans indeed.
Nour Al Hassan reflected on the journey, saying, “Arabic has been underserved by AI for too long. Our flagship product, Pronoia, changes that—it is far faster, more secure, and cost-effective. We see enterprises struggle with Arabic; but we transform day-long tasks into minutes—fundamentally changing how companies can operate in Arabic markets. It is a comprehensive AI ecosystem. We look forward to the future with great confidence.”
Said Murad, a Senior Partner at Global Ventures, added, "We're excited to lead Tarjama's Series A fundraise and support Nour and her incredible team in transforming how Arabic business problems are solved by AI. Tarjama has multiple competitive advantages, both technically and culturally, and its state-of-the-art LLM, Pronoia, is purpose-built to dominate in a market where other AI tools have consistently fallen short. We are confident Tarjama’s profitable growth trajectory will continue and its enterprise-grade Arabic AI solution will have global appeal.”
It's clear that Tarjama is paving the way for Arabic-speaking companies looking to get ahead in our digital-first world. The investment round also intriguingly featured MediaTek—the massive Taiwanese semiconductor firm—as well as Sukna Ventures, Egypt Ventures, and various angel investors dotted across the US, MENA, and Europe. That global investor support underscores confidence not just regionally, but internationally, in what Tarjama could accomplish next.
With all these heavyweight names and deep pockets behind them, you wouldn't bet aggainst Tarjama becoming a household name across the Middle East tech scene sooner rather than later. Curious to see how their journey unfolds—here at Arageek we’ll certainly be watching closely.
