TrueMoney and Visa Expand Payments in Thailand with Card-Backed QR Integration

TrueMoney and Visa now let Thai shoppers use linked cards at PromptPay QR merchants.
Users scan the same familiar QR codes, but pay by card instead.
The tie-up blends Visa perks with Thailand’s hugely popular PromptPay payment rail.
PromptPay already handles vast volumes, so a small funding change could ripple widely.
Cashback offers and Bangkok roadshows aim to make card-funded QR payments feel normal.
TrueMoney has teamed up with Visa in Thailand to let consumers pay PromptPay QR merchants using linked Visa credit or debit cards, adding a fresh funding option inside the TrueMoney app. In simple terms, users can now scan the same QR codes they already know, but pay with a card instead of relying only on wallet balance or a bank account. It sounds small on paper, but I reckon this is the sort of practical tweak that can quietly change daily payments.
The setup is fairly straightforward. Customers link an eligible Visa card to their TrueMoney account, choose that card as the payment source, scan a participating merchant’s PromptPay QR code, check the details and confirm the purchase. That’s it. No extra faff, which matters more than people sometimes admit when it comes to digital payments.
TrueMoney, which operates under Ascend Money, is effectively blending Visa’s card network with one of Thailand’s most widely used QR payment rails. For cardholders, that means access to their usual Visa-linked perks while sticking to the familiar PromptPay scanning journey. For merchants, the upside is also clear enough: more consumers can pay digitally at checkout, and there may be less dependence on cash.
Thailand is already a heavyweight in QR payments, so the move lands in a market that doesn’t need convincing about the format. DataReportal said 61.5% of Thai internet users aged 16 and above scanned QR codes on their phones every month in 2024, putting the country third globally for monthly mobile QR use. That is pretty spot on as a sign of behaviour already being built in.
PromptPay itself is operating at huge scale. Figures from National ITMX cited in the announcement show the service had more than 83 million registered numbers by the end of June 2026. In that month alone, it processed around 2.39 billion transactions worth roughly $131.5 billion. When payment systems already move at that volume, even a modest change in how people fund purchases can have a real ripple effect.
To encourage early use, TrueMoney and Visa are offering about $0.90 in cashback for a customer’s first QR PromptPay payment made through the app with an eligible Visa card. The offer runs until 31 December 2026 and is limited to one redemption per user. The companies are also running extra promotional benefits through to 30 September 2026.
They have not left it only to app updates, either. An Easy Scan and Pay Caravan was rolled out in Bangkok’s Silom and Asok business districts, with demos, registrations and prize giveaways at spots including Silom Soi 10 Market, Lalab Sap Market, Silom Complex Market and Srinakharinwirot University Market. And believe it or not, these on-the-ground pushes still matter. Around the startup scene, we often talk at Arageek about how adoption is not only about building the product; sometimes people need to see it used in front of them before it clicks, you know?
That said, the bigger picture is what makes this partnership interesting. TrueMoney is moving beyond the role of a conventional digital wallet and becoming a more flexible payments platform. On the flip side, Visa gets deeper access to everyday low-friction QR transactions in a market where scanning to pay is already second nature. If it works well, card-funded QR payments could become a normal part of shopping across Thailand rather than a niche feature. The idea is simple, but simple is definately not the same as unimportant.
