Mawarid Finance and UAE-based fintech Liabify have teamed up to roll out LiaPay, a prepaid Platinum Mastercard built with middle-income workers in mind. On paper, it’s a card launch. In practice, it signals something a bit bigger: a push towards giving everyday employees more breathing room when it comes to managing their money.
The partnership brings together Mawarid Finance, a Sharia-compliant financial institution with deep roots in the UAE, and Liabify, a fintech that operates under Dubai Founders HQ and focuses on inclusive digital finance. The result is LiaPay, positioned within a regulated and trusted financial framework, which, in this region, is not just box-ticking. It matters.
At the centre of LiaPay is Earned Wage Access (EWA). In simple terms, this allows employees to access the salary they have already earned before payday, directly through an app. For many workers juggling rent, school fees, and remittances, waiting until the end of the month can be a bit of a faff. EWA aims to smooth that cash flow gap and reduce the need for short-term borrowing.
I’ve met founders across the MENA region who insist that liquidity, not income, is often the real problem for workers. It’s not always about earning more, but about timing. And believe it or not, something as straightforward as accessing earned wages early can shift financial stress levels dramatically.
That said, LiaPay is not limiting itself to salary advances. The companies describe it as a full digital financial ecosystem. Users can open accounts instantly and access services such as remittances and instant payments, all through the same platform. There’s also an AI component designed to help users optimise spending and build towards longer-term financial wellness. Whether AI becomes truly helpful or just another buzzword, well… that will depend on execution. I reckon practical features and transparent fees will matter far more than flashy tech labels.
Rashid Al Qubaisi, CEO of Mawarid Finance, said the collaboration reflects the institution’s commitment to accessible and innovative solutions that enable customers to manage their finances with confidence, flexibility, and security. Allan Villegas, CEO of Liabify, highlighted the focus on crafting secure, seamless digital experiences that prioritise users’ financial wellbeing.
The alignment with national goals around financial inclusion is also clear. The UAE has been steadily pushing for responsible lending, transparency, and broader access to financial tools. By combining Mawarid’s regulatory oversight and Sharia-compliant framework with Liabify’s technology stack, the companies are aiming to serve a segment that is often talked about but less often prioritised: the middle-income workforce that keeps much of the economy moving.
At Arageek, we often talk about startups that chase the next big shiny thing, crypto hype, metaverse promises, you name it. I’m not always a fan of solutions searching for a problem. This, however, feels more grounded. If executed well, it could be spot on for workers who need stability, not speculation.
Of course, the prepaid card market is competitive, and trust is everything in financial services. But the combination of a regulated financial partner and a fintech player that understands the local market could give LiaPay a fighting chance. For middle-income workers looking for smarter ways to handle their saleries and daily payments, this launch may be worth watching closely.
