Telda has just rolled out Apple Pay for its customers in Egypt — a move that’s likely to make spending a lot smoother for the country’s growing base of digital-first users. The fintech, known for its prepaid cards issued in partnership with Banque du Caire and Mastercard, says the feature will give people a more secure and private way to pay using their iPhones or Apple Watches, whether they’re shopping in-store or online.
The idea is simple enough: instead of fishing around for cash or swiping a card, users can just hold their iPhone or Apple Watch next to a payment terminal. Each transaction is confirmed using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode — plus a one‑time security code that makes card cloning virtually impossible. So next time you’re at the grocery shop or your favourite café, you can breeze through checkout without faffing about with your wallet.
On the digital side, Apple Pay works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac for a friction‑free experience when shopping through apps and websites that support it. No more typing long card numbers or shipping details again and again; it fills those gaps automatically and safely. For anyone running a small business online — which many in the Arageek community do — that’s spot on, as fewer abandoned carts often mean happier customers.
Apple’s well‑known focus on privacy runs through everything here. When Telda cards are used with Apple Pay, Apple doesn’t store the actual card numbers anywhere. Instead, each card gets a unique digital ID (technically called a Device Account Number) encrypted inside what Apple calls the Secure Element — basically, a fancy chip built to lock away sensitive payment info.
Setting it up seems almost too easy. All customers have to do is open the Wallet app, tap the “+” icon, and follow the on‑screen steps to add their Telda card. Once it’s in, Apple Pay works instantly across linked devices. I reckon that kind of instant activation could finally get more Egyptians comfortable with contactless payments, something that’s been gaining momentum but still a bit of a slow burner.
Here at Arageek, we’ve seen plenty of startups striving to blend fintech with convenience, yet not all manage to win users’ trust. Telda’s jump into Apple Pay integration feels like one of those moments that could move the needle. And believe it or not, even though digital payments have grown by leaps and bounds lately, many people still appreciate having a physical card — old habits die hard, you know?
Personally, I’m chuffed to bits seeing more local fintechs embrace global tech standards. If this catches on, Egypt might finally tip into the “tap‑to‑pay” mainstream once and for all. Well… unless something else shinier comes along first, which in fintech, happens almost too quikly.
