It’s not every day you come across a big telco throwing its weight behind grassroots youth initiatives, but that’s exactly what’s just happened in Kuwait. Zain has teamed up with KAFO, lending support to the platform’s Sustainability Track—a fresh move targeting talented young people across the country. The key aim? Stir up innovation, boost collaboration, and spark communication around the environmental and social obstacles Kuwait faces. I’ll be honest, these sorts of partnerships often look good on paper but lack teeth. But here, there’s real muscle behind the plan, especially with activities lined up well into the 2025–2026 season.
As the main partner, Zain will back a host of specialised events and programmes. The focus will be on encouraging creativity and practical problem-solving among Kuwait’s youth—something I reckon can make all the difference when it comes to homegrown solutions. There’s also talk of equipping the next generation with vital skills and opportunities to exchange ideas, all with the intention of nudging Kuwait a step closer to its own national sustainability ambitions.
What catches my eye is how the partnership goes beyond the usual lip service. By rolling up their sleeves and actively involving young innovators, both Zain and KAFO seem intent on letting youth take centre stage. That said, there’s always the risk of these initiatives being just a flash in the pan. Sustained impact comes down to follow-through and whether the projects led by young minds genuinely get traction.
From what I’ve seen in the MENA entrepreneurship space, it’s exactly these kinds of collaborations that can be a game changer—if done right. It does remind me a bit of what we know at Arageek about the sheer energy startups and young founders bring to the table, especially when given the right backing (OK, sometimes it’s a bit of a faff navigating big corporate frameworks, but still). With the spotlight firmly on nurturing leadership and supporting creative talent, there’s a decent shot this initiative will do more than just tick off CSR boxes.
If you’re interested in seeing young people take the bull by the horns in sustainability, it’d be wise to keep an eye on what unfolds from this KAFO-Zain tie-up. Who knows—this could be the very platform that gives those tuned-in, passionate future leaders their first break. And, well… if nothing else, at least the conversation around sustainability is getting louder in Kuwait, which, in my view, is spot on.
