Dubai Internet City Teams with Skolkovo to Fuel MENA-Tech Innovation Surge

3 min
Dubai Internet City has teamed up with Russia's Skolkovo Foundation during GITEX Global.
This partnership aims to foster digital innovation and cross-border collaboration for startups.
Skolkovo offers a "soft-landing track" easing Russian innovators' entry into the Middle East.
Both hubs promise joint workshops and events, boosting opportunities in the regional startup scene.
Focus areas include clean energy and biomedicine, tapping into active MENA investors.
Dubai Internet City has struck a fresh alliance with Russiaās Skolkovo Foundation, and the timing couldnāt be more tellingāit happened right in the middle of GITEX Global, the worldās largest tech gathering. The idea behind this partnership is simple enough: open new doors for digital innovation, spur collaboration, and get more startups thinking beyond borders.
Ammar Al Malik, who leads Dubai Internet City and heads commercial operations at TECOM Group, described it as a move that strengthens the global digital economy. He pointed out that Skolkovo already has a strong talent base of bright, tech-savvy entrepreneurs, and joining forces could spark collaborations that reach far beyond the UAE. I reckon such cross-border initiatives can often do what big speeches canātāget founders rolling up their sleeves and building something real.
On the flip side, Skolkovoās team seems equally eager about this match-up. Timur Kornilov from the foundation spoke about creating an easier route for Russian innovators to land in the Middle Eastāeverything from legal guidance to pilot-project support. He called it a āsoft-landing track,ā which sounds a bit corporate, but in truth could save startups a load of faff when entering unfamiliar markets.
The plan runs deeper than a few handshake deals. Skolkovo has spent more than 15 years building a network of over 5,000 companies, and this agreement means its members can now tap into Dubai Internet Cityās ecosystemāa zone thatās home to 4,000 firms, including giants like PayPal, Nvidia, and Oracle. Over the years, that ecosystem has pumped AED 100 billion into Dubaiās GDP and created tens of thousands of tech jobs. Not too shabby.
For entrepreneurs around the MENA region, this arrangement could make a lot of difference. Both sides have promised to line up joint workshops, site visits, and curated business meetings. Delegations from Skolkovo will even be featured in events like GITEX Global, Expand North Star, and Step Dubaiāthe sort of platforms where, letās be honest, chance encounters often lead to big opportunities.
And it doesnāt stop there. Theyāll also look into pilot projects and proofs of concept to speed up product development. Skolkovoās focus spans clean energy, biomedicine, and other sectors where MENA investors are increasingly active. That said, itās not all plain sailing. Turning ambitious MoUs into tangible results is trickyāespecially across bordersābut if thereās one thing Dubai Internet City has proven over the years, itās that a well-built ecosystem can make even the most complex partnerships work.
At Arageek, weāve met plenty of founders who got their first big break after programmes like these. Itās a reminder that ecosystems donāt grow by accident; they grow because someone keeps the doors open. And between Dubai and Skolkovo, those doors now swing both ways. One thingās for sure: the regional startup sceneās about to get even busierāand, well⦠thatās spot on for what the MENA tech story needs right now.
(And just between us, Iām definatley curious to see which startups will seize the moment first.)
