Swiss company Hashgraph has just announced a strategic bet on AgNext Technologies, an Emirati agtech firm known for its innovative solutions. AgNext has built quite the reputation by harnessing artificial intelligence to evaluate food quality alongside blockchain-based traceability systems.
Operating across diverse markets, including Europe, India, the Middle East, and the United States, AgNext has been busy expanding its reach since completing a sizeable $21 million Series A funding round back in 2021. That round was led by Alpha Wave Incubation, backed by DisruptAD—the investment arm of Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund ADQ—which helped AgNext step into the international stage, starting with the launch of its first overseas office in Abu Dhabi.
Now, with Hashgraph's backing, AgNext is planning to bolster its existing systems by integrating distributed ledger technology (DLT) from Hedera. This move aims to significantly enhance transparency and food traceability within global supply chains, which sounds like just what the doctor ordered for tackling costly food waste—a sizeable headache to the tune of $230 billion every year, according to estimates by Boston Consulting Group.
Taranjeet Bhamra, AgNext’s CEO, expressed confidence that this collaboration would reinforce the company’s quality assurance platforms and foster a robust transactional system tailored specifically for the agriculture and food sectors. Meanwhile, Hashgraph’s CEO, Stefan Deiss, echoed that sentiment, noting that the partnership will particularly emphasise creating AI-blockchain integrated products designed explicitly for agtech applications.
The two firms won't be stopping there though—they’re also gearing up to roll out a fresh joint project in Switzerland, developing smart devices embedded with Hedera technology. This partnership certainly looks set to make waves across the tech-savvy world of agriculture and beyond—and yes, for those Arageek regulars following along, it's certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
Personally, I'm always fascinated by advances like these; technology finding practical uses in such traditional sectors reminds me of a neighbour of mine whose organic veg boxes are legendary around our neighbourhood. He'd certainly appreciate anything that helps reduce waste and boosts transparency for consumers. Good stuff indeed.
