Masdar and Tadweer Forge Ahead with Abu Dhabi’s First Waste-to-Jet-Fuel Project

4 min
Masdar and Tadweer Group plan Abu Dhabi’s first commercial facility for sustainable aviation fuel.
The project will convert around 500,000 tonnes of waste annually into clean jet fuel.
The plant combines renewable-powered electrolysis and waste gasification technologies.
The initiative aligns with UAE goals for sustainable aviation and waste management by 2030.
It positions Abu Dhabi as a regional hub for low-carbon fuels, boosting economic strategies.
Masdar and Tadweer Group have agreed to push ahead with what could become Abu Dhabi’s first commercial‑scale project turning waste into sustainable aviation fuel, a move that feels spot on for a country betting big on greener transport. The deal comes after a detailed study showed the idea isn’t just a nice thought experiment but something that can actually work at scale. And believe it or not, the plan involves converting around half a million tonnes of waste each year into clean jet fuel.
From what’s been shared publicly, the plant will use a mix of technologies: renewable‑powered electrolysis to produce green hydrogen and waste gasification to turn rubbish into syngas, which is then transformed into aviation‑grade fuel. It sounds a bit of a faff on paper, but this sort of hybrid setup is becoming more common as countries search for ways to cut emissions from aviation without grounding planes. I reckon the timing couldn’t be clearer, especially with the UAE leaning so heavily on air travel as part of its economy.
Masdar’s chief executive, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, said the initiative supports the nation’s role in sustainable aviation while helping to decarbonise a sector that remains notoriously hard to clean up. Tadweer Group’s CEO, Ali Al Dhaheri, described the agreement as another step in showing that waste has real value and can be turned into something useful instead of being dumped into landfills. His point resonated with me; at Arageek we often hear founders say the biggest breakthroughs come from treating old problems with fresh eyes.
Once running, the facility is expected to serve several markets and position Abu Dhabi as a regional hub for sustainable aviation fuel. It ties neatly into national policies such as the UAE General Policy for SAF, the hydrogen strategies and the wider Net Zero 2050 push. Aviation made up more than 18 percent of the UAE’s GDP in 2023, according to IATA, so even a small shift towards cleaner fuels has real economic weight. SAF, by IATA’s estimates, can cut lifecycle emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel — which is nothing to sneeze at.
On the flip side, projects like this take years and plenty of cash to materialise, and I’ve seen more than one startup stumble when the tech looked lovely in theory but a bit less lovely once pipes and machinery were involved. Still, Masdar’s long track record in renewables and Tadweer’s experience in waste management do give the partnership some heft. Tadweer is also pursuing its own target of diverting 80 percent of Abu Dhabi’s waste away from landfill by 2030, and this project feeds directly into that ambition.
I remember visiting a small recycling pilot site years ago and thinking the whole thing felt slightly chaotic — trucks everywhere, mixed bins, and someone trying to explain gasification while a forklift beeped nonstop. Yet somehow, those rough‑around‑the‑edges experiments are the kind that push ecosystems forward. Abu Dhabi’s move here feels like the grown‑up, industrial‑scale version of that same energy, even if the journey will definately have its bumps.
For the UAE, and for innovators across the region watching closely, this project hints at new value chains around waste, hydrogen and low‑carbon fuels. And for those of us who want to see more climate‑tech ideas coming out of MENA, it’s one more sign that the momentum isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
