Mazad held its first fully virtual live auction for special vehicle plates.
Twenty premium plates sparked “strong engagement” from bidders across Bahrain.
Car plate 699999 topped the session at BHD 140,000.
Repeating numbers remain prized as status symbols and investments.
High online bids signal growing trust in digital auction platforms.
Mazad has wrapped up its first-ever virtual live auction for distinguished vehicle plate numbers, and by all accounts, it made quite a splash. The Bahrain-based digital auction platform, part of Mumtalakat’s portfolio, reported strong engagement from bidders across the Kingdom and a wave of positive reactions to the new format.
The auction brought together a carefully selected batch of 20 special plates covering cars, trucks and motorcycles. For a market that still enjoys the theatre of a traditional auction hall, taking the experience fully online can be a bit of a gamble. But this time, it seems the bet paid off.
Some of the final figures were, frankly, eye-catching. Truck plate number 111111 fetched BHD 51,300, while motorcycle plate 44444 went for BHD 14,200. The standout of the evening was car plate number 699999, which reached BHD 140,000, the highest sale recorded in the session. Close behind were plate number 690000 at BHD 127,000 and 696969 at BHD 85,000.
There is something about repeating numbers that turns heads in the Gulf, and Bahrain is no exception. I still remember conversations with founders who joked that securing the right office address or plate number felt “spot on” for branding, a small detail, maybe, but one that signals prestige. In that sense, these plates are not just bits of metal; they are status symbols, and in some cases, investments.
Nezar Habib, CEO of Mazad, said the strong response to the debut live-streamed auction highlighted both the robustness of the platform and the public’s appetite for accessible, high-value auction experiences. He described the event as an encouraging start and pointed to more interactive concepts in the pipeline.
That matters. Digital marketplaces across the MENA region have been racing to build trust and smoother user journeys. Live-streamed bidding, when done well, removes much of the faff traditionally tied to physical attendance while keeping the adrenaline rush of real-time competition. On the flip side, tech hiccups can quickly ruin the mood — so pulling this off without noise is no small feat.
Mazad is now encouraging plate owners interested in selling to list their numbers on the platform, promising broad exposure and competitive bidding. Given the prices achieved in this first round, it’s not hard to see why some holders may be tempted to test the waters.
At Arageek, we often speak with early-stage founders about the power of building marketplaces that people actually trust. It’s not glamorous work; it’s about logistics, user support, and steady credibility-building. Well… I mean, it’s definately less shiny than a six-digit plate. But when a platform manages to blend trust, convenience and a sense of occasion, that’s when things get interesting.
And believe it or not, niche segments like premium number plates can tell us a lot about broader digital adoption trends. If bidders are willing to commit over BHD 100,000 through a screen, it signals confidence — not just in the product, but in the platform behind it.
Mazad says more live initiatives will be announced soon. If this first outing is anything to go by, Bahrain’s auction scene might be entering a new, more dynamic chapter, one where the gavel is virtual, yet the stakes remain very real.
