Omantel’s Otech Platform Aims to Propel Oman’s Digital Transformation

Omantel launched Otech to shift from telecoms to digital technology player.
The platform unites Oman Data Park and Tedom under one model.
It offers data centres, "sovereign and hyperscale cloud", cybersecurity and AI.
Backed by Oracle and PwC, it aligns with Oman Vision 2040.
Success depends on integrating infrastructure, partnerships and local talent.
Omantel has taken another clear step in its evolution from a traditional telecom operator into a broader digital technology player, unveiling a new platform called Otech aimed at accelerating Oman’s digital transformation.
The launch, announced in Muscat, signals what the company describes as a strategic shift. Otech is positioned as a unified future-technology platform, bringing together several of Omantel’s existing assets, including Oman Data Park and Tedom, under one operating model. The idea is simple on paper: consolidate capabilities, remove silos, and offer a more seamless digital infrastructure backbone for businesses and government entities across the Sultanate.
From what has been outlined, Otech will provide a full suite of services, spanning data centres, sovereign and hyperscale cloud, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and systems integration. That’s quite a mouthful, I know. In practical terms, it means organisations should be able to run everything from sensitive government workloads to AI-driven applications under one umbrella, whether on public, hybrid or sovereign cloud environments — and still meet local data regulations.
And that regulatory angle is key. Data localisation and compliance have become front and centre in many MENA markets. Oman is no exception. Otech is being framed as a national enabler aligned with Oman Vision 2040, the country’s long-term plan to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on oil revenues. If done right, this could be spot on for strengthening sovereign digital infrastructure while also attracting international partners.
Speaking of partners, Omantel has lined up a number of heavyweight names. Oracle is involved on the hyperscale cloud front. PwC is supporting cybersecurity and capability development. Nagarro joins for systems integration, while Palo Alto Networks and Fortinet are contributing cybersecurity expertise, from threat intelligence to cloud-native protection. There is also collaboration with Nama Shared Services and local startups, which, to be honest, is where I get a bit chuffed to bits — because building local tech capacity is what eventually moves the needle.
As part of the wider rollout, Omantel also inaugurated the Firq Data Centre, described as a core infrastructure asset for secure and scalable digital operations. Data centres might sound dull to some, but they are the unsung heroes of the digital economy. Without them, all this talk about AI and cloud is just hot air.
Omantel has pointed to growing demand for ICT and digital services in Oman, largely driven by government-led digital transformation initiatives. There’s also emphasis on talent development, with training and upskilling programmes in cloud, cybersecurity and AI expected to form part of the platform’s long-term play. And believe it or not, this human capital side is often the hardest piece of the puzzle. Technology can be imported; skills and mindset take time.
I’ve seen across the region that digital transformation can sometimes turn into a bit of a faff — plenty of announcements, fewer tangible outcomes. That said, bringing infrastructure, partnerships and talent under one banner could make the difference. If Otech manages to genuinely integrate these layers rather than just repackage existing services, Oman could definately strengthen its position as a regional digital hub.
For startups and entrepreneurs following Arageek, this development is worth watching closely. Stronger local cloud and cybersecurity infrastructure often means lower barriers to entry and more room to experiment. On the flip side, execution will be everything. Platforms are easy to launch on stage; building a thriving digital ecosystem is another game altogether… well, we’ll see how this one unfolds.
