Saudi e-commerce platform Shahbandr has officially rebranded as Komrz, signalling what looks like more than just a cosmetic change. The move marks a strategic shift towards what it calls “Agentic Commerce” and comes with plans to expand beyond Saudi Arabia and Egypt into the wider GCC and European markets.
After three years in operation under the Shahbandr name, the company built a base of more than 20,000 merchants. During that time, it rolled out features such as native video commerce and an early version of an agentic platform aimed at helping merchants automate parts of their businesses. Now, with the Komrz identity, the ambition is clearly bigger.
Shady Abdelshaheed, CEO of Komrz, said the original brand played a key role in building trust across its initial markets. “Shahbandr was an instrumental name in our beginning our journey, and with it, we built the trust of thousands of merchants. However, our ambition has grown bigger, and our focus has shifted from the KSA and Egypt to GCC and Europe. Therefore, we chose the name Komrz to represent our next chapter, which focuses on AI, international expansion, and the development of next-generation infrastructure for global merchants.”
At the centre of this pivot is Komi, the company’s new proprietary AI commerce assistant. In simple terms, Komi is designed to act as a daily co-pilot for merchants. Through text-based commands, users can automate tasks, manage operations and engage customers more efficiently. That might sound like a lot of buzzwords, but if it works as promised, it could save founders hours each week — and anyone who has run an online shop knows how precious those hours are.
I remember chatting with an early-stage founder in Riyadh who told me that managing logistics, payments and marketing tools across multiple dashboards was “a bit of a faff”. Platforms that genuinely simplify this mess are usually spot on when it comes to adoption. Komrz appears to be betting on exactly that frustration point.
According to Abdelshaheed, “The launch of Komi is a pivotal step in our mission. We aren’t just building tools for the sake of innovation; we are actively improving how merchants operate. In this new era of e-commerce, AI will act as a daily co-pilot for merchants, driving operational efficiency and smarter decision-making. We are creating a fundamentally different way to build and grow a business.”
Beyond the AI layer, Komrz is offering what it describes as a plug-and-play ecosystem. Merchants can launch online stores without deep technical expertise and embed tools such as live-streaming and video commerce directly into their storefronts. The platform also uses AI to help design store layouts, generate marketing copy, and even create product images and videos, supported by real-time analytics to track market trends.
Payments and logistics — usually the sticking points in cross-border commerce — are tightly integrated. In MENA, Komrz connects with gateways and BNPL providers including Moyasar, Tabby, Tamara and EdfaPay. In Europe, it plugs into Stripe, PayPal and Klarna, among others. On the shipping side, integrations include DHL, Aramex, FedEx, UPS, Zajil and SMSA. The idea is to reduce friction so merchants can focus on selling rather than juggling suppliers and service providers.
Founded in 2023, the company began its regional and international expansion phase in July 2026, aligning this next chapter with a stronger AI focus. Believe it or not, we’ve seen many startups talk about AI transformation, but fewer manage to weave it directly into everyday operations in a practical way. I reckon the real test for Komrz will be whether merchants actually use Komi daily, or if it becomes another shiny feature that sounds good in presentations.
That said, the direction makes sense. E-commerce across the GCC is growing fast, and Europe offers both scale and stiff competition. Expanding into those markets is no walk in the park, well… I mean, it requires serious localisation, regulatory understanding and logistics muscle. But with an existing merchant base and a clearer AI proposition, Komrz is clearly aiming to punch above its weight.
For startups across MENA watching this move, there’s something energising in seeing a homegrown platform think globally. Rebranding is always risky — you can lose recognition if it’s handled badly — but if executed well, it can mark a true inflection point. Komrz now has the task of proving that this is not just a new name, but a definatley new chapter in how merchants build and scale online businesses.
