My FarmWell wins UAE engineering award for practical groundwater sustainability innovation.

The University of Sharjah app supports farmers with AI-driven water monitoring.

It tracks well levels, irrigation, weather data and “specialised” chatbot advice.

Developed with IBM and Khalifa University through cross-sector collaboration.

The project reflects growing focus on climate resilience and smarter agriculture.

There’s something quietly powerful about engineers building tools that farmers can actually use on the ground. Not flashy slides. Not buzzwords. Just practical impact. That’s probably why the My FarmWell application caught the attention of the Society of Engineers UAE this year.

The app, developed under the University of Sharjah, has been named winner in the 4th edition of the Excellence and Creative Engineering Award, taking top honours in the Pioneer Engineering Project category. It was also recognised as the “Best Small Project”, a classification reserved for projects valued at up to AED 50 million and completed within the past three years.

For context, the award is no small feat. Since its launch, the Society of Engineers UAE, established back in 1979 under Ministerial Decree No. 33 and now representing more than 40,000 members, has received 1,268 submissions, with only 79 projects emerging as winners across various categories. That tells you something about how competitive the landscape has become.

So what makes My FarmWell stand out?

At its core, the platform is designed to support farmers while tackling a pressing issue in the region: groundwater sustainability. It blends artificial intelligence with environmental monitoring and digital decision-support tools. In simple terms, it helps farmers track well water levels, manage irrigation, access weather data, check crop prices, and even consult a built-in chatbot for quick, specialised responses. It also links users to water regulations and sustainability guidance relevant to the UAE and the broader MENA region.

I’ve seen first-hand how discussions around water security can feel a bit abstract at startup events, big vision, big numbers. But when you translate that into something a farmer can download from the App Store or Google Play and use in daily decisions, that’s when innovation feels spot on. It stops being theory.

The project was led by Dr. Adewale Giwa, Assistant Professor at the University of Sharjah, whose research centres on water sustainability and AI applications. The initiative was not built in isolation either. It reflects collaboration between the University of Sharjah, IBM and Khalifa University, alongside contributions from government entities, researchers and technical teams.

IBM’s involvement came through its Impact Accelerator initiative, supporting the integration of AI, analytics and digital technologies into the platform. And believe it or not, it’s exactly this kind of cross-sector partnership that tends to move the needle in sustainability projects. On their own, universities or corporates can only go so far.

That said, apps alone will not fix groundwater depletion. I reckon technology is only as good as its adoption. Farmers must trust it, policies must reinforce it, and incentives need to align. But as tools go, this one appears to be a meaningful step in the right direction.

The recognition highlights how engineering in the UAE is increasingly interdisciplinary, combining artificial intelligence, environmental science and digital infrastructure to address climate resilience and resource efficiency. It also aligns with broader national efforts focused on water security and smarter agricultural practices.

For those of us who follow the startup and innovation scene across MENA, this win feels simbolic of something bigger. Sustainability is no longer a side conversation. It’s moving into the mainstream of engineering and product development.

And if practical, data-driven tools like My FarmWell keep gaining traction, well… that’s good news not just for farmers, but for the entire ecosystem trying to build a more resilient future.
