Calo intends to become a global household name in food technology.

Bahraini food tech company Calo has just confirmed its big move into the UK market with the acquisition of two British-based meal delivery brands, Fresh Fitness Food and Detox Kitchen. Sources say Fresh Fitness Food customers will shift over to Calo's platform by May, while Detox Kitchen will join shortly after this month. The transition promises similar meal plans, aiming for a nice, seamless customer experience.

This expansion comes on the back of some significant recent momentum for Calo, following an impressive Series B funding round that raised $25 million. Led by Nuwa Capital and backed by investors such as STV and Khwarizmi Ventures, the cash injection saw the company valued at around a tidy $250 million. At the time, Calo had said it intended to use its latest funding to shore up its regional dominance and pave the way for international growth—which, as Arageek readers might remember, specifically included a UK-based acquisition.

This move marks Calo's first bold step outside the shores of the GCC countries; until recently, its main stomping ground has been the Middle East, where it's quickly grown from strength to strength. Since its launch in 2019, Calo has expanded into Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar, with plans underway to have delivered more than 10 million meals by 2024. Pretty impressive stuff if you ask me, especially considering it's only been five years since their operation kicked off.

After establishing itself in Britain, Calo isn't stopping any time soon. The startup has set its sights firmly on further international market expansion, eyeing opportunities across Europe and even the US market in the near future. Who knows, pretty soon folks from London to Los Angeles could be feasting on food prepped by one of the GCC's hottest Irish tech start-ups. Watch this space—something tells me Calo will become a household name pretty quickly.
