Move supports digital sovereignty while boosting trust in cloud adoption.
du Tech’s National Hypercloud has become the first cloud platform to secure official certification and endorsement from the UAE Cybersecurity Council, marking a notable step in the country’s push towards digital sovereignty.
In simple terms, this means the platform has been recognised as compliant with the UAE’s strict national cybersecurity and data residency standards. For organisations in the public and private sectors, especially those handling sensitive data, that tick of approval is more than just a badge. It removes what many in the industry have long described as the “trust barrier” around cloud adoption.
I’ve seen this hesitation up close when speaking to founders and tech leads across the region. Brilliant ideas, solid funding — but when it comes to moving critical workloads to the cloud, there’s always that pause. Where is the data stored? Who controls it? And what happens if regulations shift overnight? Well… I mean, these are not small worries.
According to Jasim Al Awadi, Chief ICT Officer at du, the certification represents a commitment to the UAE’s digital sovereignty and its ambition to lead in cybersecurity. He said the goal is to remove barriers to cloud adoption by setting what he described as a new gold standard for secure and sovereign cloud infrastructure. He also noted that this positions du Tech as a key strategic partner in the country’s broader digital and cybersecurity agenda, while maintaining global connectivity and innovation benchmarks.
His Excellency Dr Mohammed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cybersecurity for the UAE Government, framed the move as part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to reinforce the country’s digital sovereignty. He said it addresses challenges linked to adopting cloud computing and establishes stronger standards for secure infrastructure, all while supporting digital transformation and the national cybersecurity ecosystem.
That balance — sovereignty on one side, global innovation on the other — is not easy to pull off. On the flip side, organisations still want hyperscale performance, flexibility, and the ability to scale fast. A cloud that is secure but clunky is, frankly, a bit of a faff.
du Tech says its National Hypercloud combines hyperscale-class capabilities with local operation within UAE borders. The architecture is designed to ensure full data residency, aligning with national cybersecurity frameworks, while still delivering the performance and scalability expected from international cloud environments. Sectors such as healthcare, finance, government, and critical infrastructure are likely to pay close attention, given their heavy compliance burdens.
And believe it or not, timing is everything here. As AI-driven analytics, IoT deployments, and large-scale digital services expand across the UAE, the demand for secure and compliant infrastructure is only accelerating. The country has made no secret of its ambition to be a global digital hub, and infrastruture like this is part of the backbone.
From where I stand, this move feels spot on. Not flashy, not overhyped — just necessary. If the UAE wants to strengthen international confidence while protecting national data and vital interests, building trusted local cloud foundations is definatley part of the equation.
For startups and scale-ups across MENA reading Arageek, there’s a quiet but important signal here: the rules of the game are becoming clearer. And when clarity comes to regulation and infrastructure, innovation usually follows.
