Lobna Helal Breaks Barriers as First Female Chair of Telecom Egypt

Lobna Helal has made history by becoming the first woman ever appointed as chair of Telecom Egypt’s board, stepping into the shoes of Dr Magued Osman, who decided to move on after nine years leading the telecom giant. Helal's appointment undoubtedly marks a significant breakthrough—not just for Telecom Egypt, but also for women leaders across the country.

With more than three decades of solid experience in banking and finance behind her, Helal's resume is impressive. Previously, she served as deputy governor at Egypt's Central Bank, where she played a pivotal role in drafting monetary policy and keeping the country’s economy on an even keel. Currently, she also holds positions within prominent financial and development institutions, including the National Bank of Egypt and Egypt’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, making her a well-respected figure within financial circles.

Reacting to her historic appointment, Helal thanked the board members at Telecom Egypt for placing their faith in her, describing it as a great honour to become the first woman at the helm. She stated clearly her determination to build upon the strong foundations left behind by her predecessor, emphasising her firm commitment to continue steering the company toward sustainable growth, robust corporate governance, and a clear strategic vision. Alongside Helal’s groundbreaking appointment, Telecom Egypt has also confirmed Mohamed Nasr as its managing director and CEO, starting his second term with immediate effect.
