Ring has rolled out a new AI-powered Smart Video Search feature in the UAE, aiming to make it far easier for people to dig out specific moments from their home security footage. I remember chatting with a few founders at an Arageek meetup who joked about spending half their evening scrubbing through doorbell videos just to see when a parcel finally showed up — a bit of a faff, honestly — so this sort of update feels spot on for busy households.
The feature runs through the Ring app and taps into the company’s Ring IQ system, which blends its in-house AI tools with something called Visual Language Modelling. In simple terms, it matches what you type with what appears in the recorded footage. Instead of scrolling for ages to check “what time did the kids get home?” or “when did the dog slip into the garden?”, you can type the question and let the system pull up the exact moment. And believe it or not, it works with all kinds of everyday happenings, whether family-related, pets or just general home activity.
Mohammad Meraj Hoda, Ring’s Vice President for Emerging Markets, said families across the UAE are leaning more on smart tech to stay in tune with what’s happening at home. He explained that Smart Video Search is meant to make monitoring simpler and more intuitive, helping users jump straight to the important bits without trawling through hours of recordings. I reckon that’s the sort of practical innovation people actually appreciate — not flashy, but genuinely useful.
The feature is now rolling out in public beta for UAE customers who subscribe to the Ring Home Premium plan, which costs $20 a month or $200 for the year. It works with all Ring doorbells and cameras, so there’s no need for extra hardware. On the flip side, it’s still early days, so I wouldn’t be surprised if things feel a tad rough around the edges… well, I mean, that’s the charm of beta sometimes. One tiny detail that caught my eye is how seamlessly it integrates into the existing app layout, something other smart-home brands often struggle with.
Anyone curious can find more details on Ring’s website. And as always, conversations around smart home tech tend to stir up plenty of mixed feelings in the startup circles I bump into, but most folks seem chuffed to bits when a tool actually saves them time — even if just enough to enjoy one extra cup of coffee.
