STC Bahrain has signed a new memorandum of understanding with Huawei, stepping up its push to become a fully fledged tech-driven company through what it calls EVOLVE 2.0. Around Arageek, we’ve seen plenty of these “TechCo” pivots over the years, and honestly, this one feels more than just a box-ticking exercise.
The agreement builds on the original EVOLVE programme, which quietly did a lot of the heavy lifting. From speeding up cloud adoption to rolling out new digital services, it helped sharpen customer experience tracking and laid the groundwork for autonomous network operations. If you’ve ever watched a telecom try to modernise, you’ll know that end-to-end frameworks covering everything from sales to monetisation can be a bit of a faff, so getting measurable results is no small thing.
With EVOLVE 2.0, STC Bahrain and Huawei are leaning harder into intelligence-led operations. The focus now is on creating a scalable digital architecture that’s ready for advanced data workloads, high-performance computing, and Copilot-style tools designed to support decision-making and day-to-day operations. In plain terms, this means more automation, smarter insights, and less manual tweaking across both business and network domains.
That said, the ambition doesn’t stop at shiny tools. The partnership also targets higher levels of automation and so-called zero-touch operations across radio access, transport, and core networks. The idea is to improve service quality, smooth out customer journeys, and open up new revenue streams. I reckon this is where many such transformations either shine or stumble—execution is everything.
Ahmed Alsharif, Chief Technology and Digital Officer at STC Bahrain, described EVOLVE 2.0 as the next chapter in its TechCo journey, aimed at strengthening digital and AI foundations while accelerating innovation. From Huawei’s side, CEO of Huawei Bahrain Harry Yu pointed to a shared commitment to enabling enterprise-grade generative intelligence and intelligent operations at scale.
On the flip side, not everyone is convinced that “lighthouse TechCo” labels automatically translate into market impact. I’m not a fan of big slogans, well… I mean, they often promise the moon. Still, the specific emphasis here on data intelligence and autonomous operations feels spot on, especially in a region where telecoms are under real pressure to diversify beyond connectivity.
For founders and tech teams across the MENA region who follow Arageek, this kind of collaboration is worth watching. It shows how legacy players are trying to rewire themselves, and if they pull it off, others will definately take notes.
