stc Partners with Ericsson to Elevate 5G Coverage in Saudi Arabia

stc Group is doubling down on 5G in Saudi Arabia, signing a multi-year deal with Ericsson to widen coverage, add capacity and push further with 5G Standalone across the Kingdom. The agreement was unveiled during LEAP 2026 in Riyadh, and it also brings what the companies say is the first commercial deployment anywhere in the world of Ericsson’s Radio 4496.

At its core, the deal is about scale. New network sites will be rolled out, while existing ones will get extra capacity as demand for 5G keeps climbing. The deployment is due to start in 2026 and continue over the life of the agreement within Ericsson’s footprint in Saudi Arabia. In plain terms, stc wants stronger coverage in more places, while also making sure busy areas do not get bogged down as more users come online.

One detail that stands out a fair bit is the use of 600 MHz spectrum, newly acquired by stc. This low-band spectrum is set to be carried through Ericsson’s Radio 4496, a quad-band Frequency Division Duplexing radio that combines four low-frequency bands into one 400-watt unit. That might sound technical, but the point is quite simple: lower-band spectrum tends to travel further and penetrate buildings better than higher-frequency airwaves. For a country as geographically spread as Saudi Arabia, that is a pretty big deal.

It means rural and remote areas could see stronger 5G reach, while indoor connectivity may also improve. stc plans to pair this 600 MHz layer with its mid-band network, which is more suited to heavy traffic and faster speeds in denser zones. Put together, it is a balancing act between breadth and muscle. I reckon that is the spot on approach for any operator trying to serve both major cities and harder-to-reach communities without making the whole thing a bit of a faff.

The wider network expansion will lean on several Ericsson Radio System products, including low-band radios for 600 MHz, Massive MIMO and mid-band radios, as well as baseband kit and radio access network software. That mix should help stc support wide-area coverage while still meeting the higher-capacity needs of urban locations and other demand hotspots. And believe it or not, these technical choices often matter just as much as the headline-grabbing announcements, because they shape how people actually experience the network day to day.

There is also a business angle here beyond mobile phones. The expanded footprint is expected to strengthen stc’s Fixed Wireless Access offering, which uses mobile infrastructure to deliver home or business broadband in places where fibre is not available yet. Around the MENA startup scene, readers of Arageek will know this matters more than it first appears. I have seen founders in smaller cities struggle with patchy connections when trying to run cloud tools, payments or even simple video calls, and it can quietly slow everything down. Better FWA will not solve every headache, but it can remove one stubborn bottleneck.

The network build-out is also aimed at supporting sectors such as logistics, energy, mining, tourism and public services. That said, the bigger strategic play may be in 5G Standalone itself. This version of 5G is designed to support more advanced services with lower latency and more control over performance, opening the door to differentiated connectivity offers for enterprises and industry. On the flip side, the real test will be whether those capabilities turn into practical services that customers actually want, rather than just impressive slides at conferences.

The agreement also extends Ericsson’s software subscription model to stc, allowing ongoing software upgrades and new capabilities without depending only on large hardware replacement cycles. That should give stc more room to improve performance and efficiency over time. I’m not a fan of telecom jargon when a simple point will do, but in this case it basically means the network can keep evolving without constantly ripping everything out and starting again.

The partnership itself is not new. Ericsson and stc have worked together from the 2G era through to 5G, with Ericsson acting as one of stc’s main radio access network suppliers and supporting its earlier 5G rollout as well. Sultan S Alturki, Technology Procurement General Manager at stc Group, said the latest agreement would help reinforce 5G connectivity across Saudi Arabia while extending reliable coverage to more areas. Fadhel Isa, Head of Networks at Ericsson Saudi Arabia, said the combination of extra capacity and 600 MHz spectrum would help broaden connectivity across more of the Kingdom.

For Saudi Arabia, this move looks definately significant because it ties together three priorities operators are chasing at once: broader coverage, more capacity and a more software-driven network model. The Radio 4496 launch is the eye-catching bit, of course, but the bigger story may be how stc uses low-band and mid-band spectrum together to create a more flexible 5G setup. If that works as intended, it could give the operator stronger rural reach, better indoor service and a sturdier base for broadband and enterprise use cases as the market matures. Well... that is where the real value usually shows up.
