stc pay Bahrain has picked up international recognition after winning the “Telecom – Connecting the Unconnected” category at the 2026 Merit Awards, a nod to its efforts in expanding financial access across the Kingdom. The award spotlights companies using telecom infrastructure to bridge real gaps, and in this case, the gap is financial inclusion.
In simple terms, the mobile wallet has been working to bring people without traditional bank accounts into the formal financial system. Through a fully digital onboarding process, no paperwork, no long queues, none of that faff, users can set up accounts and start sending, receiving, and managing money straight from their phones. For low-income residents and blue-collar workers especially, that shift can be life-changing.
I’ve seen across the MENA region how being “unbanked” is not just an inconvenience; it can hold back families from building any sort of financial stability. So when a local fintech starts moving the needle in a practical way, it’s spot on to pay attention. And in Bahrain’s case, this push fits neatly with the country’s Economic Vision 2030 and its wider digital transformation ambitions.
One of the more interesting details here is stc pay’s role in supporting the expatriate workforce. The platform offers tools for cash deposits and withdrawals, alongside international transfers to more than 60 countries at competitive rates. For a worker sending money home every month, small savings on fees can add up quickly, and believe it or not, that can mean the difference between scraping by and managing a bit of breathing room.
There’s also the integration with Bahrain’s Labour Market Regulatory Authority for the Wage Protection System. By linking directly with WPS, stc pay helps ensure salaries are paid on time and transparently. It may sound technical, but timely wage payments are the backbone of a stable labour market. Without that trust, things can unravel fast.
Commenting on the win, Metin Zavrak, CEO of stc pay Bahrain, described the award as recognition of the company’s commitment to using technology for broader social impact. He noted that the goal from day one was to build an inclusive digital future for all residents, regardless of income or banking history, and to help close critical financial gaps in line with national priorities.
Since launch, the numbers show solid traction. The app has recorded more than 700,000 downloads and processed over 30 million transactions, with a total value exceeding BHD 900 million. That’s not pocket change. Partnerships have also played a part: integrations like the Miles+ rewards programme with Gulf Air and Mastercard prepaid cards are designed to keep users engaged within a growing digital ecosystem.
On the flip side, awards alone don’t guarantee long-term success. The real test is whether adoption continues to deepen and whether financial habits shift in a lasting way. But for now, stc pay Bahrain appears to have carved a strong position in the Kingdom’s journey towards a cashless economy, and I reckon that’s definately a space worth watching closely.
For entrepreneurs across MENA following Arageek, there’s a quiet lesson here. Financial inclusion isn’t just a social good; it can also be a serious business opportunity when executed well, with the right partnerships and regulatory alignment. And sometimes, building impact is not about flashy disruption but about fixing what has been broken for years… consistently, patiently, and at scale.
