UAE fintech Alaan commits AED 3 million to help SMEs with bills.

Up to 1,000 firms can receive AED 3,000 over three months.

Businesses also get six months’ free access to its payments platform.

A “Sawa Partner Network” lets members offer services and discounts.

The move reflects a shift towards resilience, community, and easing essential costs.

UAE fintech Alaan has rolled out a new initiative aimed squarely at small and medium-sized businesses feeling the squeeze of rising costs. The company says it is committing AED 3 million through a programme called “Alaan Sawa: Better Together”, designed to help SMEs cover essential utility and telecom bills over the coming months.

At a time when many founders are watching every dirham, this kind of move will likely turn heads. I speak to entrepreneurs across the region almost daily, and lately one theme keeps popping up: keeping the lights on – quite literally – is becoming pricier. So, support that tackles DEWA, SEWA, ADDC, Empower, du or Etisalat bills is, frankly, spot on.

Under the initiative, up to 1,000 UAE-based SMEs can receive as much as AED 3,000 in support across three months to offset those essential expenses. On top of that, eligible businesses will get free access for six months to Alaan’s corporate card and cross-border payments platform.

That said, the company is not stopping at direct financial relief. It is also introducing what it calls the “Sawa Partner Network”, described as a first-of-its-kind regional effort that encourages businesses on the platform to back one another. In simple terms, companies can offer their own services, perks or discounts to fellow members. It’s a bit like saying, “You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours,” but in a more structured, fintech-powered way.

Parthi Duraisamy, Co-founder and CEO of Alaan, said the initiative is intended to step in where it matters most for SMEs. He noted that many businesses across the UAE have continued to adapt and support their teams despite ongoing challenges, adding that Alaan Sawa aims to ease essential costs while making it simpler for companies to support each other.

Alaan itself has grown quickly since launching in 2021, raising more than $55 million to date. Recognised as a UAE Future 100 company, it now serves over 3,000 businesses across the region and processes billions of dirhams in transactions annually. Through Alaan Sawa, the firm says it plans to extend support to an unlimited number of businesses that opt into the broader programme elements, beyond the initial bill coverage.

Eligibility is focused on UAE-based companies with 10 to 250 employees. Some benefits will be introduced in phases as new partners join the network. Existing Alaan customers in sectors such as food and beverage, hospitality and tourism may also qualify, depending on their account profile.

I reckon initiatives like this reflect a wider shift we’re seeing in the MENA startup scene. It’s no longer just about hyper-growth at all costs; it’s about resilience, community and managing burn in a sensible way. On the flip side, AED 3,000 will not transform a balance sheet overnight. But for an SME juggling rent, payroll and supplier payments, that breathing room could definately help steady the ship.

And believe it or not, sometimes what founders need most is not a flashy funding round announcement but practical support that removes a bit of operational faff. For readers of Arageek who are building businesses in the UAE, it’s another sign that the ecosystem is maturing – companies stepping up to support one another, especially when margins are tight.

More details about the programme, including how to join the Sawa Partner Network, are available through Alaan’s website and dedicated contact channels. For many SMEs right now, every little helps… and this may be a timely boost.
