Arc Ride wants electric mobility to become the "default choice" over petrol vehicles.
Kenya’s Arc Ride has pulled in $33.3 million in a mix of equity and debt, giving the electric mobility startup fresh muscle to grow its battery-swapping network and push deeper across Africa. The round was led by Norrsken22 and Novastar Ventures, and it marks a pretty big moment for a company betting that two- and three-wheel electric transport can become less of a niche idea and more of an everyday thing.
Founded in 2019 by British entrepreneur Joseph Hurst-Croft, Arc Ride runs on a battery-as-a-service model. In simple words, riders do not need to buy the battery upfront, which cuts the initial cost of owning an electric motorcycle. Instead, they use Arc Ride’s smart battery-swap stations, a setup designed to make electric transport more practical and affordable than petrol alternatives. That matters a lot in markets where cost at the start can be a real headache.
The company is already operating in Kenya and now plans to strengthen its footprint there, including in Nairobi and the western part of the country. On top of that, it is expanding into South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda. After a pilot in Cape Town, Arc Ride has started rolling out vehicles in Gauteng, which suggests the South African market is no longer just a test run.
The new capital will also support the deployment of 5,000 more electric motorcycles and help scale the company’s swap-station infrastructure. For startups in mobility, infra is often the tricky bit. Building the vehicles is one challenge, but creating the network that keeps them moving is where things can become a bit of a faff. Arc Ride seems to understand that well.
Among the companies working with Arc Ride is Yadea, the global electric vehicle manufacturer, which adds some weight to its customer base. And believe it or not, partnerships like that can be just as important as the funding headline, because they show there is industrial backing behind the commercial plan.
Hurst-Croft said the goal is to make electric mobility the default choice for riders across Africa by making it more accessible, more affordable and more practical than petrol vehicles. He said the funding would allow Arc Ride to build the infrastructure needed for that shift and do it quickly. Ngetha Waithaka, partner at Norrsken22, pointed to the company’s unit economics and rider adoption, adding that Arc Ride’s technology, data and network effects could help it become an open standard for mobility on the continent.
That said, expanding across several African markets is never straightforward. Regulation changes, rider habits differ, and infrastructure gaps can catch founders off guard. Still, I reckon Arc Ride is chasing a sector with real urgency behind it. Anyone who follows founders through Arageek’s wider startup lens has seen how transport pain points often turn into serious business opportunities when the model is spot on.
There is also a broader angle here. Electric motorcycles are not just about cleaner transport; they can also reshape daily economics for riders, especially where fuel costs keep biting into earnings. I’ve seen enough startup stories from emerging markets to know this kind of detail is not trivial, you know? If Arc Ride can keep costs low and swaps easy, it may have a stronger case than many flashy mobility firms that looked good on paper but struggled on the street.
For now, the company has cash, investor backing and a clearer route into new territory. Whether it can turn that into a continent-wide network is the bigger test, but this raise definately gives it a stronger shot.
