Fawry has acquired Dirac Systems, expanding its services into HR and accounting software.

The Fawry Dirac unit targets small and medium enterprises to modernise their operations.

This aligns with Fawry's strategy to dominate payments and the broader financial back-office.

Localising these services could transform Egypt's SME scene by enhancing efficiency.

Success depends on how swiftly Fawry Dirac can demonstrate its value to business owners.

Fawry, Egypt’s heavyweight in digital payments and financial services, has snapped up Dirac Systems, a cloud-based provider of HR and accounting software built for local businesses. The financial terms weren’t disclosed, but the deal marks another step in Fawry’s push beyond payments into wider enterprise solutions.

Dirac’s platform offers HR departments the tools to manage workforce operations smoothly while keeping them aligned with Egypt’s often tricky labour regulations. On top of that, their accounting system is designed to make company finances less of a faff, ensuring compliance with the country’s tax frameworks while reducing the risk of costly errors. From what I’ve seen, many small firms across Cairo and Alexandria struggle with this exact mismatch: modernising operations while staying spot on with paperwork.

The new unit, branded Fawry Dirac, kicks off with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises. It promises to digitise day-to-day operations that are usually handled in spreadsheets or, frankly, with stacks of paper. That said, Fawry has already flagged its ambition to scale these services for bigger corporations, suggesting flexible systems that can handle more complex organisational needs.

It’s worth noting that this acquisition follows an earlier stake Fawry took in Dirac earlier in the year. So, in a way, a full takeover felt almost inevitable. On the flip side, Fawry has also been broadening its portfolio through other moves, like its earlier play for Virtual CFO, which underlines a clear strategy: dominate not only payments but also the wider financial back-office.

I remember chatting with a founder at one of Arageek’s meetups in Amman who said, “cashflow is king, but compliance is like the shadow you can’t shake.” Deals like this hit exactly on that problem. If bundled well, these services can save SMEs time and protect them from costly mistakes.

Personally, I reckon this is defendately good timing. Egypt’s SME scene is buzzing, but efficiency tools are often either overpriced or imported without much localisation. Having a home-grown player like Fawry tie finance and HR functions under one roof could be a game‑changer. And believe it or not, sometimes it’s the small digital tweaks—an automated payroll, or a simple tax submission—that give entrepreneurs breathing space to dream a bit bigger.

For now, all eyes will be on how quickly Fawry Dirac can prove its worth. But if it works as promised, plenty of business owners will be chuffed to bits.
