Seef Properties highlights the importance of collaboration for achieving sustainable development goals.
I'm a fan of seeing startups and corporates alike stepping up to the plate when it comes to sustainability, and Seef Properties in Bahrain are certainly making strides in this arena. Recently, they've signed an agreement with Bahrain's Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) to join the national KAFA’A Programme. Basically, it's a government initiative to help high energy-consuming buildings cut down on their electricity use and, in turn, reduce carbon emissions. A pretty spot-on effort, if you ask me.
Under this new agreement, two of Seef Properties' busy commercial hubs—Seef Mall in Seef District and Seef Mall Muharraq—will take proactive measures to up their energy efficiency game and better comply with the Kingdom's standards for sustainability. All in all, this aligns nicely with Bahrain’s ambitious plan—a push towards carbon neutrality by 2060, echoing similar eco-friendly commitments across the wider GCC area.
Ahmed Yusuf, CEO of Seef Properties, said the company's involvement in the KAFA’A Programme highlights its commitment to sustainable future practices. “We are dedicated to adopting best practices in environmental sustainability, advanced technologies, and digital systems to optimise the management and operation of our properties. This step highlights the value of collaboration with government entities in achieving sustainable development goals and reinforces Seef Properties’ role in supporting Bahrain’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and responsible resource use, in line with Bahrain Economic Vision 2030,” Yusuf explained.
And believe it or not, this isn't Seef Properties' first rodeo when it comes to sustainable innovation. They've recently kick-started a major solar energy project aimed at powering all their locations with renewable energy. Turns out the project has a capacity of around 8.9 megawatts, helping generate approximately 14,000 megawatt-hours of cleaner electricity per year and slashing carbon emissions by more than 10,000 metric tonnes annually. Well... I mean, that's quite impressive stuff, really.
From an Arageek perspective, it's this sort of initiative we love—empowering companies in the region to go greener and smarter. I reckon we'll see plenty more corporate players in the MENA region following suit, even if getting started with energy efficiency might feel like a bit of a faff initially. Now that's the sort of commitment that's worth celebrating.
As a reminder, Seef Properties was first established in 1999, has been publicly traded since 2007, and has steadily grown to be a prominent name in retail, hospitality, real estate and entertainment in Bahrain. Their current portfolio certainly packs a punch, bringing innovation and creativity to spaces enjoyed by thousands across the kingdom each day.
