Saudi Arabia's telecom giant, Etihad Atheeb Telecommunication Co. (GO Telecom), has officially snapped up a 51% majority stake in Ejad Tech Co., a firm known for its IT services and digital transformation consulting, in a deal worth about SAR 86.7 million—that's roughly $23.12 million, in case you're wondering. As planned, the transaction was finalised on June 22, 2025, once all the regulatory boxes were ticked off.
Interestingly enough, GO Telecom didn't cough up the entire sum straight away. They've already shelled out SAR 40 million—just shy of half—and have committed to settling the rest through two instalments: about SAR 23.7 million by the end of 2025, with the final SAR 23 million due by the close of 2026. Paying by instalments—that seems quite handy these days, doesn't it?
This move is spot on with GO Telecom's broader strategy to diversify and expand its operations beyond traditional telecommunication services. They've clearly identified digital transformation as a golden goose, and Ejad Tech seems just the right partner in their quest to beef up their tech capabilities.
And believe it or not, acquisitions like these really excite startup communities across MENA—at Arageek, we've watched similar moves boosting local startup ecosystems. Seeing a big player invest significant resources and faith in home-grown tech talent is surely uplifting for other entrepreneurs too. I remember chatting informally with a founder at a tech gathering in Riyadh recently, and he told me how thrilling it is to see fellow Saudi startups rise from strength to strength.
In honesty, I'm usually a bit sceptical when large firms acquire smaller agile companies—sometimes cultures clash, goals get muddied, you konw? But this particular deal seems sensible, leveraging Ejad Tech's solid expertise to help GO Telecom position itself more strongly in the booming tech sector.
On the flip side, it'll be interesting to see how smoothly the integration goes and whether Ejad Tech retains the innovative spirit that made them a valuable asset in the first place. We'll definitely be keeping an eye on this one as part of our ongoing journey to empower and energise MENA startups.
