Saudi Arabia's healthcare sector is stepping up a gear with the introduction of a pioneering strategic guide aimed at unlocking the potential of generative artificial intelligence. Published jointly by PwC Middle East and the Healthcare Sector Transformation Programme, the new report entitled "Exploring New Horizons in Healthcare: A Strategic Guide to Generative AI in Saudi Arabia" lays out a clear roadmap for using AI to reshape the future of medical services in the kingdom.
Set within the ambitious framework of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, this guide comes at a critical moment as Saudi Arabia increasingly looks towards advanced technologies to tackle major healthcare challenges. According to findings from PwC Middle East's 28th Saudi CEO survey, the enthusiasm for generative AI amongst decision-makers is through the roof: an astounding 92% of executives aim to embed it systematically on their technology platforms within the next three years. Around 88% are eyeing its integration in their broader business strategies, and 79% see it playing a crucial role in developing new products and services.
Within healthcare specifically, hopes are high that generative AI can help create what's described locally as a genuinely "vibrant community"—one that benefits from tailored medical imaging, improved diagnostics, personalised predictions about necessary care, as well as helping discover new medication and even taking health services on the road with mobile clinics.
Tarik Al-Bashtawi, partner for health industries and leader of the digital transformation division at PwC Middle East, remarked that the guide highlights "enourmous potential" for generative AI—not just in streamlining healthcare operations but, crucially, in boosting standards of patient care and outcomes. As Saudi Arabia strides purposefully towards the targets outlined in Vision 2030, implementing generative AI technologies is expected to make the healthcare system more flexible, efficient, and distinctly patient-centred.
Right alongside these lofty aspirations, Abdulqader Hamdan Al-Muin, digital transformation adviser at the Healthcare Sector Transformation Programme, noted that the programme is fully focused on creating a future for healthcare that's accessible, efficient, and prevention-oriented. Deploying generative AI and other advanced technologies, he added, would help set a global benchmark for healthcare quality—not just improving immediate patient outcomes, but setting a gold standard for other nations to follow.
This initiative also addresses longstanding issues—such as managing chronic illnesses and improving access to healthcare in regions that are traditionally underserved. With generative AI on the frontline, there's hope of significantly easing the stresses currently faced by medical professionals, offering them practical tools to lighten their administrative load, allowing them to refocus their attention directly on patient care.
Arageek readers will know how these tech breakthroughs can often feel abstract at first glance, but this particular move looks to be genuinely transformative in practical terms. From enhancing frontline services to pushing boundaries in medication discovery, generative AI is no longer a distant proposition—it's rapidly becoming integral to Saudi Arabia’s healthcare ecosystem.
Through this combined effort by PwC Middle East and the nation's healthcare transformation programme, Saudi Arabia clearly demonstrates its unwavering commitment to innovative healthcare provision that’s accessible, efficient, and prioritises the unique needs of every community. The report serves as yet further evidence that, when it comes to mixing future technologies with meaningful human impact, Saudi Arabia is determined to remain at the cutting edge.
