United Arab Bank (UAB) has made a decisive move towards the future of digital banking, teaming up with the UAE fintech Lune to roll out a fresh AI-based upgrade for its mobile banking app. The idea? To transform everyday banking into something far more personal and intuitive, whilst giving customers a much clearer view of their own finances. I must admit, after years following MENA fintechs with Arageek, it’s rare to see a partnership that’s quite so ambitious—so hats off to them for going the extra mile rather than just tinkering at the edges.

At a recent signing (and by all accounts, quite a gathering), UAB’s Head of Retail Banking, Emre Yalcin, joined Lune’s co-founders Helal Tariq Lootah and Alexandre Soued, together with senior folk from both sides. These aren’t just handshakes and PR moments; the plan is for UAB to take raw bank transactions and weave them into simple, useful insights—served up straight through a slick new app interface. So if you’re one of those people who finds understanding your bank statement a bit of a faff, this might just be spot on.

The system, running under Lune’s hood, won’t simply show you the categories of your spending, but will nudge you with personalised tips, offers that actually make sense, and smarter tools for planning ahead with your money. All this is packaged within a conversational digital experience—think less fiddly spreadsheet, more friendly assistant. Yalcin pointed out that working with a homegrown tech partner like Lune means they’re not just importing some generic solution, but actually getting local payment expertise built in. That said, I reckon there’s always a danger in making things too clever; sometimes you just want to check your balance without jumping through hoops, you know?

Helal Tariq Lootah, Lune’s co-founder, highlighted that both UAB and Lune share a vision for innovation and empowering customers—nothing earth-shattering there, perhaps, but it shows how the UAE is determined to keep pace with the top digital banking markets. The collaboration is set to reinforce UAB’s digital-first strategy, with a focus on building trust and delivering value—the kind of bold, transparent financial planning that, in my experience, often makes or breaks a relationship with your bank.

On the flip side, it remains to be seen how quickly users will adapt; people can be a bit set in their ways when it comes to day-to-day banking. Still, if the app delivers on its promise and takes some of the head-scratching out of managing finances, I’d be chuffed to bits. And believe it or not—even the best digital trends sometimes start with a small, clever tweak, rather than fireworks. Here’s hoping customers find this one genuinely helpful… and not just flashy tech for tech’s sake.
